New Speedo cable not working

Well about a week ago my speedo cable snapped. It worked just fine before it broke. Now after replacing the cable the speedo kind of works. It reads 50mph when i know i'm going a lot faster than that.

Is there a certain way I have to insert the gear into the transmission? Do I have to get a new gear since I got a new cable? Any other suggestions? I'm getting pretty good at guessing my speed now

I take it that the driven gear was replaced with the speedo cable? If so, the teeth on the new gear must be less than what you had if you are now going faster than what the gauge tells you.

No, it was not replaced. Its the same gear that was in there.

If you took the driven gear off and used it on the new cable and your meter now reads differently...well, I can't figure that one out.

Noooo, this sucks. So there is no wrong way of inserting the driven gear into the transmission?

My factory manual says to lubricate the speedo cable thats inside the housing. I didn't do this because I didnt know I had to until i looked in the manual. So I installed it without lubricating it anyways, just to make sure the new cable worked. Could that be the problem? What kind of lubricant do I use? It just gives a part #.

You shouldn't have to lubricate it as it is lubricated by transmission oil. I have a manual tranny. If yours is an automatic then maybe it's different. i don't know. Maybe someone else can chime in on this?
