New Starter Question

Does anyone have the correct way to wire a new late model style starter up to my 69?

I believe there needs to be a constant hot to the solenoid and then the big wire to the post on the starter side. But I would like some confirmation.
I am going to continue to use the existing solenoid.

If you have a starter ment for use with an external solenoid then it sounds like you have it right. Same way you would wire a classic starter.

attach the large + cable just like your old starter. Then, run a jumper wire from the S post on the old solenoid to the solenoid on the new starter. Good to go.

It still does not work. It just spins and never engages the flywheel. I take it that it must be bad? It spins real nice though....

Either it's bad, or you have the wrong starter/flywheel for the application.

To be honest... I think you have the wrong starter or flywheel as a starter rarely fails in this manner.

Your probly not making contact with the flywheel. On my scattershield it had two sets of holes drilled, one for the mini starter and one for a stock starter I think? If it has 2 posts and a spade the way to do it is run a battery hot lead (hot side of the solenoid) to the empty post (not the one that goes into the starter motor) and run a small gauge wire from where your stock starter cable would go (opposite side of the solenoid) and run that to trigger the little spade.

FYI, Inner set of holes are used if you have a 157 tooth flywheel and the outer set are for the larger 164 tooth flywheel. Either can be used with a mini-starter if it is matched to the proper flywheel.

Yes, this was it. Luckily a co-worker suggested the same thing. Starts like a champ now. I'm so ashamed....

Oh ok, makes sense. I wired my starter with a jumper wire from the pole to the little spade and my starter would stay engaged for a few seconds, so I rewired it and mine works great too. Glad to see that worked out for you.
