New steering shaft?

I have a 95' cobra...I recently replaced my rack/pinion and I believe I have to replace my steering shaft. The frkn rag joint is such a piss poor design.

My steering is so sloppy. I can move it at least a 1/2 inch from side-side while driving w/o moving the wheels.

My question is can I just replace the joints w/aluminum or steel or do I have to replace the whole shaft?

I made my own steering shaft use the stock one. I just bought a U joint that fit my size and cut the shaft the size I needed and welded it on.
