Welcome to the forums. And congrats on the mustang buy. If you want some easy bolt'ons you could do at home and will give you power I suggest a good throttle body ( tb ) and a plenum. 70mm for both. Take maybe 1 hr and will give you a great punch after 3k rpms. I have yet to do this but its on one of my next to do list. But nothing will go with the vert better than a good catback exhaust system. I suggest Flowmaster American Thunder ( also known as 2 chambers ) Great sound ! Subframes will help but I personally wouldnt do it as part of my 1st mods. But if I had to do my 1st mods over again I would get 4.10 gears. Run you about $130 for the part and about $175-$250 for labor and install. But once you get the gears you gotta install a speedcal. If you dont use one it will put un-nessary miles on your car and throw off your MPH. Anyways good luck on your car hope you have many many fun times in it :nice:

Gears are out for me, unless I drop in a 6 speed, then I may go to a 3.53 or whatever is close to that. This won't be a track car. I have no desire to drive something with 4.10's on the street, never mind the highway. :)

Thats a mistake. Dont fear the gear. 4.10s are fine on a daily driver. 3.73s are nothing to worry about at all. Gears are an absolute must.

Naaah, I put way too many highway miles on for that. If I have to turn more than 23-2400 at 85 then I don't want the gears.

Well your making a dumb mistake. What more can I say. You dont have to listen to those of us who know what we're talking about.

Get some 3.73's at least...I'll check on the way home and see what RPM's I have at 85 but its not much. In a vert you'll probably have more problems with wind noise at 85 than worrying about your engine RPM's

I have also noticed that rpm's are very slow to drop when I let off the gas and slip in the clutch. Has anyone had this issue?

Cavepony
I have also had that issue with my 2000 GT 5 spd that i just bought. Does Anyone know if this is normal or why it is doing it? Also my car idles between 500 and 1100. It never seems to hold steady, it revs up to about 1100 then fall to around 500-600 then revs up again. Could the slow RPM drop and irregular idle be connected?

I have an 03 GT vert and like they are saying you'll enjoy the car soo much more with 3.73 or 4.10's
I went with 4.10 and in a rag top the flow 40's drown out the engine noise and the Mach 460 powers out the flows :nice:
Even if your push 85 mph your only running about 3k rpm. It's not going to hurt your mpg's buy that much if that's what your worried about.
I get around 300 miles on hwy driving with 4.10's from full tank till the fuel light comes on. Running at around 70-80 mph.

enjoy the car they get lots of attention :hail2:

Whatever Dude, I have driven a lot of vehicle's with 4:10s and I am definitely not going that low. I understand what you are saying, the car will be much quicker playing around town, but I will be making some highway mile road trips. (My truck gets 13 mpg. :( ) I usually set the cruise at 83-85 on the trips. I am not interested in something obnoxiously loud either, I want it to rumble at low throttle and roar at WOT. :)

The bottom line is I would love to put in a KB (if I can swallow the price), so I am hesitant to mess with the gears. Then again, I could alway's sell them if the KB is a way's off.:)

Do any of you have the llink to that gear calcualtor? And what is your real world experience around town with low gears. Do you have real life numbers for rpm's?

Now you guy's got me rethinking the plan:)

only real prob I have around town with my 4.10's is the surging in 4th gear @ 35-40 mph but I just drop it to 3rd and it ok.

Pros:
Fast off the lights, nice mid range road driving 50-> drop it from 5th to 4th @ 50mph and feel the TQ it's soo much fun.

Cons:
slight drop of 1 or 2 mpg, lots of shifting changes, too easy to light up rear end (oops! sorry that a Pro :nice: )

Yeah, you guys are tempting me now!

Thanks for the pic! Are the ratios in the 3650 the same as the t45?

What I would do

I would do the catbacks first. I recommend the Magnaflow for both sound and performance (not the MagnaPack cause its much louder). Their catback is just slightly louder than stock at idle and doesn't get too much louder until you step on it at WOT.

Since you don't want gears, I would skip the CAI/TB/plenum and go right to the suspension. That's the way I wish I had done it. You'll get obvious results immediately with the suspension instead of a couple hp here and there which you probably won't feel in the seat of your pants.

Just my .02

Oh, and BTW, congrats on becoming a Stang owner. It's a hobby I'm sure you will come to obsess over like the rest of us.

did you happen to locate a good shop? i noticed alot of people on here mentioned buying steeda parts, but your not that far from their facilty in pompano. they are one of the leaders in mod motor tech and parts. take a trip over and talk to them, i don't think you'll regret it.
