New top + paint job question?

Hey guys,

My top on the vert is very bad...I am changing it this week, I also need a full body paint job..My question is If I install my new top then get the car painted will it affect the material of the top? Will it fade or get dust to the point that it is impossible to clean?

I am assuming that they will cover it I think But with what?

they will cover it...its better to put the top on first...that way...your not leaning over/on a fresh paint stang

That makes no sense at all. You would wait until the paint is cured before you would attempt to put it on. Plus why risk the top to over spray?

I would wait to install the top but like I said theres holes and the back window is missing..lol

well if you know anything about paint the car would be well covered

then there is no risk of over spray..

Well since I work at Sherwin Williams and have been spraying cars the last 5 years I like to think I know a thing or two. It doesn't matter how much time you take masking there is always a chance that you can get over spray. So if your done being a cocky 12 year old STFU.

well then all your doing is creating more work for your self...having to make sure no to hit the car or anything...ill do it my way and you go on the way you do it...take maybe 10 more mins to tape it off and then o look no over spray....

ill "babble" on about what i know and what i dont know ill let you guys school me in on...if you dont know how to tape off a damn car so you dont get over spray on the top then you should by painting the car...this is how we painted my dads 86.. guess what...no over spray on the top...just a matter of take a few extra mins to make sure its tapped off.....

Ok kid there is this little thing there is this little thing called actual experience. Not sitting in the driveway with a thumb up your ass watching your dad do everything and than tell people that "we" did it. It has nothing to do with extra time taping, there is air pressure used to apply paint to the vehicle, that pressure can create a gap in the masking for over spray. I dont say this because its the way I have always done it, I have seen brand new tops get ****ed up in an actual body shop because they decide to put it on early.

You guys really need to lighten up on Ryan. I'm glad I'm not a mod, I'd be handing out bans on a routine basis. You all had to start somewhere. Sure, he may not know as much, and replies with the knowedge he does have, but you guys jumping up and down on him is a bit ridiculous. If you mask correctly, you won't get overspray on areas you don't want any, period. And by the way Sherwin-Williams manufactures and sells paint, they don't paint cars. Yep, I used to work for Sherwin-Williams. Back when their automotive division was still in Chicago, before they moved it to Cleveland, and they didn't paint cars there, nor do they paint any in Cleveland now. I used to make their paint in the Chicago Emulsion Plant, my aunt is the Midwest Supply Chain Manager for the company, and my former neighbor is the Human Resources manager in the plant. It's pretty safe to say, I have a bit of knowledge about S-W, and painting cars is one thing the company doesn't do. Just wanted to clear that up, since I also know a thing or two.

Yea I dont paint cars for sherwin williams, I have the spraying experience from before I started here.

take the top off first, that way you can take all the molding off to get a decent spray job. Prime and sand/paint all your vert moldings, unless your are getting new ones. let the paint cure for a week and then put the new top on. That is how I plan on doing mine this summer. I cant see trying to mask off all that trim. that would be too much work. While you are at it, the top frame can be removed in case it has any spots that need to be blasted/painted while the rest of the car is in for paint. go for the gusto and do everything you can at once that way it can all go back together quicker. I hate taking things apart over and over again

That's what I would do. If they over spray it should be covered by the shop anyway
