New tranny F***ed up... some advice please

I JUST got a rebuilt tranny in my car, and i was backing up, it wasn't all the way in gear, i gave it some gas and it banged out of gear.. now it making loud clicking noise and pops out after 2 seconds or so...

my Q: can i just get that gear rebuilt? how much do you guys think it will cost? thanks for any replies...

no warranty on the tranny? I thought there mite be a 30 day warranty for rebuilt tranny's

i'm pretty sure you can just get the one gear replaced.

It sux becasue I drove my car with no 1st gear and 2nd popping out for about a month becasue i couldn't afford to fix, i finially fixed and now this happens..


has anyone here just replaced one gear on these boards? Should i try and find a mechanic to do it on the side? I just want the cheapest route here... q

Hey, man. Most of the time when a tranny pops out of gear it's because the shift fork is slightly bent. It is very hard, even for a rebuilder, to notice a bent shift fork. Also, it could be from a syncro hanging up. My car pops out of 1st and 2nd sometimes, and I rebuilt it. I just don't wanna tear it apart again. I would not advise you to tear apart your tranny, because there are a shiot load of very small parts, clips, and retainders in there. Get a professional to do it for you. But, usually it's not a gear that is bad when it pops out of gear. Hope this helps.

is it cost effective to have someone try and fix this tranny? or should i just get another tranny?


(BTW, can u spell/sound out you license plate?)

Very true! I just recently went through my T5 (why its and 83' NWC and my car is an 87' I have no clue) and it is hard to know how they go together. But if I had to take my choice between autos or manuals, manuals are a hell of a lot simpler and are rather straight forward in design. If you know generic parts like the difference between torrington type and timken bearings and other things of the sort not to mention an exploded view diagram or rebuild book, it can be done. The T5 is a very simple design so it's not hard to work on at all.

But in addition to what Stang8URMPRT said, another thing that can cause it is loose bellhousing to engine bolts. If not mounted right, the engine's torque can twist independentley of the tranny and definitely pops the tranny out of gear - it also causes premature clutch failure in the long run.

so.... should i have it looked at? i jsut don't want to pay for someon to look at it then the guy tell me it will be more $$ to fix than just getting another rebuilt

I tell you what. I would have the syncros replaced in the gears that are popping out. I would also have the shift forks and Z links replaced. That should solve your problem, if it's not the bellhousing loose.

You have 3 shift forks, 1/2 3/4 and 5th. I would replace the 1/2 and 3/4. It's hard to give you an estimate cause many places charge different prices. I would say around 300 bucks for the syncro rebuild and install of the Z-linkage and shift forks. The shift forks I believe are about 30 bucks each. I would call D&D Performance to get them.

Reverse is shared with 5th - they are both on the counter-cluster shaft towards the tailshaft (outside of the casing but inside the tailshaft housing and reverse is inside the casing). All reverse is is the application of a 3rd gear member to get an opposite direction.
