So I bought a remanufactured water pump for my 289. But there seems to be a problem.

The fan blade that is sticking straight down in this picture rubs on the metal behind it. It only happens in the spot it's in in that picture. No other blade rubs on that spot, only the one that is sticking straight down. I'm concerned that it could be a problem later on after I install it. It makes a high pitched "ping" sound every time I spin the blade around. Should I just return it and get a new one or should I just not worry about it? Need help ASAP cause Napa closes in 1 hr. Thanks.

Oh and in the old bottom radiator hose there is a spring in there. Do I have to put it in my new hose?

I would return it. The spring is there to keep the hose from collapsing if it is rusty I wouldnt reuse it. If the new hose is the ribbed type you probaly won't need it.

The cheaper suction hoses have a spring in them to prevent them from collapsing and causing low coolant flow. The better hoses do not have a spring because they are made better and the rubber will not collapse when the coolant is hot.

Well I bought it from Napa. Are they considered a cheaper hose or better hose? I put the old spring in the new one just to be safe...

I hate remanufactured, spend the bucks and get a newly built water pump, you'll be happier.

So I bought the new cast iron pump water pump from Napa and it seems to work just fine. I got it all bolted up and the belt back on the pulleys but I have a question on the belt tension. How tight or how much play should the belt have? I don't have ac or ps so its only one belt running around the fan, alt, and chaincase pulleys. I just tightened it as far as I could tonight but wanted to ask to make sure, there seems to be a little play as of now. Also, since I completely flushed all of the fluid out of my radiator (and a lot drained out from the engine block because the front end was pointed down as it sat on the upward slant of our driveway today) should I just fill it back up with a 50/50 mix or do I need a more concentrated solution (more anitfreeze and less water)? Thanks.

50/50 mix is good. There will be some slack in the belt. Just make sure you can't turn the fan (WITH THE ENGINE OFF) by hand, unless you have a fan clutch. When you have everything tightened up, start the engine, watch for leaks, make sure the alternator is charging, engine comes up to normal operating temperature, check for any leaks again, then shut the engine off and check belt tension again. You may have to retighten the belf after it settles into the pulleys.

You should have about 1/2" of slack in the belt, too much puts stress on the water pump shaft

I would stick a water hose in your radiator and flush your system before refilling it with clean coolant.

I bought my hose from NAPA. I asked them why it didn't have a spring and he told me the reason. Yes NAPA are the better hoses. If it is a cheaper brand that will be prone to collapsing when it gets hot it will have a spring inside it.

Thanks, Ya I already flushed the radiator with my hose, you shoulda seen how much rusty crap came out. I'll probably have it power flushed this winter. I put the spring in the bottom hose just to be safe.
