hey guys i just had a few questions on some tranny things, first i was wondering only auto tranny's have torque converters right? and also what is like a shift kit and all that stuff u can get? what do they do? thanks
 
slushboxes have convertors and flexplates.
shift kits normally change the rpm's that the box shifts at.
 
only autos use shift kits. Shift kits make the shifts faster and harder, thats why some people cant break the rear tires loose on a stock tranny on the 1-2 shift but once they get a good shift kit they can kick the car out side ways on the 1-2 shift and bark the tires on the 2-3 shift. Getting a good shift kit is key, you dont want some kits like B&M shift improver kit that actually does more bad than good and can **** up your transmission.
 
ok thanks alot, i have a t-5 so i guess i dont have to worry about that, its just i was looking around and everyone says like get a shift kit or im getting a good torque converter or something and im like damn im gonna have to get these things and i dont even know what they are but i guess i dont need to, i was looking at the howstuffworks site from the other thread and read about torque converters from what i read manuals dont need them right? cause they use clutches to disconnect the engine from tranny right?
 
i didnt read valve bodies never heard of them, that site is awsome tho, i learned how an engine works in 10 mins, they have alot of really cool stuff on there
 
well now you know if you ever read about one. ;) O and I must say, you are quite the post whore. like 24 hours ago me and you both had around 108 posts then i went to bed, and now you have 172! And thats not including the non tech posts you made in the talk section! But o well you are learning, and helping out as much as you can so its all good. :nice:
 
as said, you dont need to worry about that stuff with your manual trans. focus more on quadrant and clutch items.
the stock AODE (electronic overdrive automatic transmission) is kind of a turd. unless it is built, they cant handle a lot of power. a manual body is said to be a sweet set up.
oh yeah, i refer to automatics as slushboxes, which is common slang for them - for when you are reading, you will see that term. :)

Actually the AOD is the auto in the fox cars. It has no electronics. The AODE came in the later models. Both trannys have a bad rep, but my AOD has always been reliable. It helps to run a cooler, and also I think the AOD gets a bad rep from people not knowing how to operate it driving it around in OD all of the time so that it is constantly shifting between 3d and OD until the band fries. Now I am speaking of the AOD as mine is used, which is just for normal everyday driving. A stock AOD is not great for any sort of racing, in that circumstance it would most likely be as HISSIN50 stated a turd. :D

The Shape, thank you for the correction. my bad. i figured by 87+ they had electronics in them (and thought i had seen people refer to AODE). again, my bad.

you brought up a good point. ill preface it by saying that i dont have an auto, so what i say is from what i have read. in stock form, the AOD should be fine. when power and TORQUE is up, that is when one can run into trouble. but that is not unlike T5 problems when they see a lot more power.

plus a lot of autos are not well maintained - proper maintanance and upgrades, like The Shape did with his trans cooler, etc, will greatly improve longevity and tractability.

hha like 24 hours ago i had like 30 posts, lol im just trying to get my posts up, i like seeing them higher, but im trying to help some people out with the LITTLE knowledge i know, its always cool to see new people come here and i know more then them that makes me feel good :)

Good point on maintanace too HISSIN I know plenty of people who will run an auto tranny 70-80K miles and never change the fluid and filter :nonono: Then they complain when the tranny dies :rolleyes: .
