Well as I stated earlier my underdrive pullies came in today and since I was going to be working on my car anyways I decided to get rid of my smog pump. For the most part it was a very simple process removing the smog pump, the bolts in the back of the heads were the hardest part. Then I had to figure out what to plug them with, on the left side I used a random bolt with some RTV, on the right a spark plug fit perfectly. For the exhaust hole I also used a spark plug put into the rubber tube. I spent some trime trying to grind down small water jackets but it just wasn't worth it with the tools I had.

Next came the U/D pullies which were a breeze minus the alternator pully which I rented a puller for from AutoZone. That tool is a waste of time and money I must say, complicated with no directions and it doesn't even work for my alternator. 70 dollars, a screwdriver to jam the fan on it, and a torque wrench later it came off. Only problem I still have is I had to guess on belt size so I bought one 80.5 and one 81.5. Both are too big so I will be going tommorow to get the right one, I measured with a string and came up with 77. So I am still running the pump until I get the right belt.

But the power difference is pretty suprising. I am very happy, 50 bucks for 10hp is awesome.

I just installed my underdrive pulleys this week and you sure can feel the difference, good bang for the buck. I didnt install the alt pulley because of charging issues and living in hot Florida that could be a problem. I went with a belt that was 1/2 inch shorter than stock but I can still go a little smaller, still have some slack.

I removed my smog and just used a shorter belt......why did you use a pulley?
just curious.

Oh I don't actually have proof or anything for the 10 HP, just assuming what it says is correct (which might be naive of me). But it is a very noticible gain in HP, I get up there way quciker. After I get some drag radials I will take it to the track and see where I am with GOOD traction.

I don't have cats, I have an OR H Pipe. And I know many people who are state ceritfied so inspections are no problem. One of my good friends works at Jordan Ford here in San Antonio.

You do not need a smog pump delete pulley at all.

There is a way to reroute the belt so that you can just ditch the pump for free.

Time to use my MSpaint skills

EDIT

Stock on the left, bypassed smog on the right.

Under drive pulleys have some overheating problems associated with them if you live in a hot state or the desert southwest. They also can also cause charging problems because the alternator doesn't turn fast enough at idle or low speed.

Ya my alternator isn't charging as much but it doesn't seem to be a problem yet, as for the overheating this also hasn't been a problem but I'm pretty lucky since it's winter because I live in Texas.

We will hear from you come summertime. You'll have overheating and charging problems from running the A/C in traffic, or from having the lights, defroster and radio on all at the same time.

Plan on saving money for a 3G alternator and bigger radiator. It gets hot in Texas, I lived ther for 21 years, andI can remeber how hot it gets in the summer.

Ya by then I will have already bought a new alternator. I already planned on it. A new cooling system is up on my list of things to do as well. Ya the Texas heat is a bitch on cars, it toasted my CD player's ribbon.

By the way both those belts do not fit I am running to AutoZone to get a 84.5 which should fit. A safe bet is original size minus 6 inches. Maybe 7 for the UD pullies.

Depends on what underdrive pullies you have, if you did a 3G conversion and left an OEM pulley or if you are like me and run a super-small Overdrive alt pulley.

Easiest way is to take a string, wrap it around the pulleys and measure it and get 2 or 3 belt sizes close to it and test them out. Try it in the parking lot if you can take the car there and return the ones you don't need.

Oh and if the autozone employee doesn't know, the last 3 numbers of a belt part number are usually the size in inches...so BELT300765 usually is a 76.5" belt. That's how some brands work.

Damn... another Seat of the Pants dyno. lol

The only hard data I've been able to find so far for under drive pullies was an article I came across some time ago where they measured HP on a dyno with no belt at all. That dyno showed a 16 RWHP increase (roughly 20 HP at the crank). For the purpose of this discussion, I'll say that 5 HP of that was due to the stock fan not being powered (low estimate). If your pullies are 20% under drive, then your total HP increase should be in the neighborhood of 2.2 RWHP (11 RWHP x 20% = 2.2 RWHP).

For thge benefit of doubt, let's say that only 3HP was used to power the fan because the fan was cold and not friction locked. That leaves 13 RWHP. 13 RWHP x 20% under drive = 2.6 RWHP. We can round it up and say 3 RWHP (again, for the benefit of doubt).

I'm always on the lookout for a back to back or before and after dyno for a set of Mustang under drive pullies. The claims that these manufacturers come up with, just don't wash.

Daggar problem is you might be giving too much credit to the pullies...dyno session going from clutch fan (tight like a tiger little tiwan made repro pc.) to taurus...gain was 15hp/18tq at 5700.

When I did my pullies, i did them with a combo of mods.

I deleted the A/C and smog pump, installed the U/D's and removed the engine-driven fan and installed an E-fan.

With that combo of mods, i noticed a big diff

I'm not sure I understand the point you're trying to make.

Are you saying that the fan on the beltless Dyno should account for more than the 5 HP I listed above?

If so... then the pullies themselves would be totally worthless.

I mean... if 15 of the 16 HP on that car were fan only then just 1 HP was robbed by the remaining accessories.

The string trick sucks because you end up measuring the lowest part of the groove, where the belt doesnt even ride, youll end up getting a belt thats too short. Cut up a belt thats too large, then measure thatway you have the correct fit in the pulley and you actually get it right the first time.
