No Fuss Speaker System for a Fox

Hey all.

Anyone have the hot ticket for decent speaker setup for a Fox body?

Currently, I have a set of Alpine factory replacement speakers in the dash and some 6x9s in the rear. I'm using a fairly decent Panasonic head unit that is (if I recall correctly) 40 or 45 watts per channel.

I get it, that the speaker placement on the Fox is crap. Particularly the 86 since there are no door speakers. The 6x9s I have in the back, either require more power than the factory head unit to power correctly --or-- are easily over driven. As I turn the volume up, the rear speakers begin to get muddy. It's a problem because I have fade the speakers to thee rear to hear over the, "tinny", small speakers I have in the dash.

All and all, what I have in the car doesn't sound good and doesn't seem to work well together.

I should note that I've long since removed the factory amp from the dash.

Here's what I'm looking for...

I would like a set of speakers that work well together. I've got enough highs from the Alpine dash speakers and they're the only speakers in the car that seem to work well with the head unit (i.e. don't break up, don't sound muddy, and RMS seems to be correct for the head unit's output).

What's a good setup for the back? I would prefer to NOT run an amp if I can avoid it. I don't want to find a place to put the damned thing and I really don't care for the extra crap/dead weight.

So I guess what I really want is a complete 4 or 6 speaker setup and head unit that sounds clean, and will fill the car with sound.

What I DON'T need is 1.21 Giggawatts of the Funky Monkey.

Is what I want out there? Is there maybe a way to remount the rear speakers so they're not facing each other? What do I need to do?

I'm in the same boat as you Noobz. And I have the same listening criteria as you do. I have the same equipment that you have (more or less) w/ the same level of satisfaction in the end result (not). I just don't know if you can rely on 3.5/6x9's to get a decent sounding system using the built-in amp in an aftermarket head unit. I will be interested in what you can learn from this thread.

I think a good portion of the problem may be that the rear speakers face each other instead of facing up and forward. With your fab skills mike, I'm surprised your car hasn't been setup to address that portion so far.

I'm considering trying my hand at some fiberglass fabrication, if it comes to that.

The sound quality in my coupe sucks too..... I have a really nice sony head unit that I have had in all my mustangs but in the coupe with the speakers I have it sounds like crap...

Thats the carpet assy that sets in back window, the hole is for the third brake light. The cut outs are in the backing board under the carpet layer,

My 91 sounded nice, Infinity Kappa's 3.5"(ish) up front, Pioneer 6x8's in back... a Kicker 10' sub, Phoenix Gold mono amp, Pioneer deck, and new wires all around... it's a simple setup...

I really wanted to pick up a nice equalizer and put it below the deck, but haven't got around to it.

I DO have my Kicker 6 x9's facing up from the package tray (it did require slight modification for them to fit) The magnets were all over the trunk torsion bars when I did this though, and that is why the torsion bars are no longer used to hold my trunk up. ( lift shocks now do that) To me they still sound pitiful.
Granted, the open cavity into the trunk offers no "back box" as an enclosure,
and that is probably a greater part of the problem. Additionally, I don't have door speakers, as I wasn't going to cut into the pony door panel insert to allow that so I double suck.

I'd be willing to cut my door panels if I knew it wasn't going still sound like crap once I was finished.

If I can find a speaker combination that sounds good, I'm all over it.

i have speakers all behind panels and out of the way..

6.5 kappa perfects in the doors, behind the panels.
6x9 kappa perfects in the rear under the package tray
3.5" kappa in the dash behind the grilles
single 10" custom enclosure in the trunk drivers side corner

will make your ears bleed if you want or can be listened to at lesser volumes for early morning driving

Well... that's getting a little closer. Still looking for that 4 or 6 speaker combo with no amps. Just need enough base to make it all sound clean. Def no desire to go down the road BOOM BOOM BOOM making the seams rattle.

Here is what I have in the front of my mustang. When I did the Dash swap I lot my place to install my tweeters. So, I purchased a set of Qlogic Q-Forms kick panels for a Fox mustang. Moved my 6.5" from the door to the kick panel along with the tweeter. I also have the entire Mach1000 setup from a 2003-2004 mustang, including the 6disc indash, rear package tray with amps, and the 2 10" Mach audio 10's and the 4 additional amps. My car ROCKS. Crystal clear, no distortion and I would recommend them to anyone. Just get a good 6.5" component set and run it off your deck.

well then you run "x" speaker and power it off the deck. if you don't want to amplify speakers, then you likely won't get very good sound. you can't have it both ways.. even factory systems are amplified.

Well the in-dash unit that I have contains an amp. The trick for me is to find the correct speaker to function with the 40 +/- watts per channel that the amp puts out.

I think the Alpine speakers I have in the dash are a good fit but my 6x9s may want more power (they get muddy as I tilt the fade towards the rear and turn the volume up). So, I'm thinking that the speakers I have in the rear are NOT a good match.

With that, I also think that with the right crossover, a set of application specific speakers for the doors or the kick panels that Chrome Rust is talking about above, that I can get the cab filling clarity I'm looking for without 50lbs of sound equipment.

Any idea what the difference would be from an 87 app to an 86 application? Aren't the factory kick panels interchangeable between an 86 and 87?
