No spare tire...what to cover chasam with?

Since I don't have a spare tire (Hooray for AAA) The pressboard/thin metal cover over my spare tire well is warped inward. What else can be used to effectively cover this pit? The problem is that my T-Tops weigh a ton, and when I take them out, they slide INTO the hole.

I was thinking of getting my local metal shop to cut me a piece of ¼" aluminum w/ a hole in it for lifting and actually fastening it to the trunk bed w/ some hinges.

Damn, I thought that this was a weight loss thread! The Gf has been after me to loose some weight…
My tire cover got wet and fell apart so I took a sheet of 1/2 inch plywood and cut it to fit in the hatch of my vert. I think that a half sheet would get it, I work at a lumber yard so I just grabbed a scrap piece. you can probably find a half sheet at lowels or HD, if it only needs one cut they will cut it for you.

I used them once and i could have changed 8 tires by the time they even got there. Now when i get a flat, i just do it myself. I carry a small took kit in my trunk with a breaker bar and correct socket. 10 minutes and the flat is changed. AAA guy hasn't even left the Dunkin Donuts yet by that point.

ive used AAA for several years and not only has it saved me 2 tows but unlocked my car twice, plus their ins is cheeper than any of the local guys. they used local tow agents that are slow but thats not AAA fault.

Its not about doing it myself...hell, I could change a spare in my sleep. Its just that I don't carry a spare tire. So if I get a flat, Just tow my ass home and I'll get a new tire in the morning. Or something along those lines. I just couldn't justify spending $$ on a 5-lug 17" spare tire when I'm paying for AAA already.

I wanted to put a sub down there, but it would have to sit flat, my T-Tops would still sit over top of it (unless it was off to one side) and I want to do a in-car PC as well as external amps for everything...so I'd need the storage space. (plus, I've never fiberglassed anything before, and I'm SURE I'd screw it up.)

I was thinking of an aluminum plate just because I want something lighter/more elegant than a piece of MDF or plywood.

back in the day a friend of mine had a rockford 10 inverted in the spare tire well. he had the well lined with fiberglass and the thing hit like crazy. not as hard as the 4 15's he had before but he was changing from loud to contest sound. The top of the sub stuck out into the hatch and the basket was polished. You would have to find the airspace in the well minus the space the sub would take for it to sit flat. would be a good project.

I would buy the Spare, was just reading on Buckeye Stangs that a Guy called AAA for a Tow and after 4 or 5 Hours they said that he would have to wait until tomorrow. I dont know about you but I am not leaving my car on the side of the road overnight!

I've never had that kind of problem w/ AAA....of course, I pay for the gold membership....I've never had to wait more than an hour.

AAA has been good to me too, I'm going 5 lug this week and I intent to lose the spare and jack, shed some weight.
