No start after T5 swap

Just got done with my AOD to T5 conversion, everything is in and ready to go and when i went to fire up the car to test it all out, it wouldnt start. battery is fine, etc it just behaves as if the clutch safety switch (which i didnt hook up, couldnt find which wires to plug in) is not allowing it to start, or maybe the car thinks that the car is not in park, and wont start. turn the key and nothing happens, just the usual idiot lights, etc.

if i can locate and plug in the clutch safety switch, will that allow the car to start?

any advice appreciated, thanks

will the car start if you jump the starter relay?

If so Yes... U have to take the 4 pin connector thats under the car that use to connect to the aod and jump the 2 pins that make the car thinks its in park or nuetral.... Unsure of the colors but if you dont figure it out. Ill go and check my car for you and get the correct colors for you
 
There is 4 wires that went to the neutral safety switch on the auto trans,I can't remember the colors but the easy way is to strip all four down and with key on tie 2 together until the back up lights work.Then you know the other 2 have to be together to crank,make these permanent and your good to go.The 2 to wires left go to the B/U switch on the side of the trans.
 
ok yeah there are two pigtails under the car, ill try the technique you said tomorrow

seems to me that the car thinks its still an AOD and not in park, therefore it wont start

thats exactly whats going on, theres a switch in the aod case that closes the circuit when in park and allows the car to start. just jump those two wires and all will be fine. btw the connector youre looking four will be a round gray one on the drivers side coming out right above the crossmember.
 
It is a must to have the clutch safety switch hooked up. I had a donor car, so I used all the trans wiring harness. All of the wires in the automatic dash harness are already on your car. They are just taped up from the factory. You must search above where your feet go on the drivers floor to find them. There are two on the left side, and one or two on the right. Plug these in and you should be golden.
 
Hey quick91lx, I see you are a Jersey 5.0 driver too. How was the install for the t5? Any details on the install? I'm going to do it next year and i'm looking for any feedback I can find.

the swap really isnt too bad, the hardest part is swapping the 5-spd pedal assembly in under the dash. even though its a PITA, it doesnt take all that long to do. just be patient. the other thing i can say is make sure you have ALL the parts you need. if you want more specific detals feel free to PM me

as long as theyre jumpered like they were for the automatic itll work fine. im not running a clutch switch at all and it runs fine, you just gotta be careful when you start the car that its not in gear.
 
Here's a checklist:

Since some of the tests will bypass the safety interlocks, make sure that the car is in neutral and the parking brake is set. Becoming a pancake isn’t part of the repair process…

Check battery, terminal connections, ground, starter relay switch (also known as solenoid) and starter in that order. The clamp on with 2 bolts battery terminal ends are a know problem causer.

A voltmeter is handy if you are familiar with how to use it to find bad connections. Measure the voltage drop across a connection: more than .5 volts across a connection indicates a problem.

1.) Will the car start if it is jumped? Then clean battery terminals and check battery.

2.) Check the battery to engine block ground, and the ground behind the engine to the firewall.

3.) Jump the big terminals on the starter relay next to the battery with a screwdriver - watch out for the sparks! If the engine cranks, the starter and power wiring is good. The starter relay is also known as a starter solenoid.

4.) Then pull the small push on connector (red wire) off the starter relay (Looks like it is stuck on a screw). Then jump between the screw and the terminal that is connected to the battery. If it starts, the relay is good and your problem is in the rest of the circuit.

5.) Remember to check the ignition switch, neutral safety switch on auto trans and the clutch safety switch on manual trans cars. If they are good, then you have wiring problems.

6.) The starter may be hung, loosen up the bolts that hold it on, and give it a good whack with a big hammer. Tighten up the bolts and try again.

7.) If that doesn't work, use a jumper cable from the positive lead on the battery direct to the starter post where the big wire from the relay connects. If it cranks then, it is the power wire from the relay gone bad. This will be hard to do, since there isn't much room to do it.

8.) Pull the starter and take it to Autozone or Pep Boys and have them test it. Starter fails test, then replace it. If you got this far, the starter is probably bad.
 
you dont NEED a NSS, i am not running one and my car startf fine, and you can start it in gear if need be, i have had to lol when clutch cables broke.

but on my car, i just plugged the plug i had under the car into the t5 pigtail. it fit and i have back up lights and everything.

Oh yeah, they are jumpered from the factory....forgot about that one. I didn't have any problems when I finished mine, so I don't have a clue now....:shrug:
 
UPDATE:

with the battery fully charged and the cables on tight, the car will crank when jumping the terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver.

the car still thinks its out of park, though...put a jumper wire between the light blue/red and white/pink wires and still nothing.
 
When I did my swap. I just unbolted the netraul safty switch from the AOD and kept it plughed into the harness. I then hid it in a good location in the car that is easy to locate but not in sight only where I know to look. I use it as a theft devise. When you turn the key you must know where to find the switch to push to get the car to start.

Also on the plus side if I park the car for a good amount of time, I can even unplug the switch, take it with me and the car will have no way of starting. Unless the thieves know what wires to splice on what harness.
 
My 82 Capri never had a NSS on the clutch. I got reamed at the tech so I now take my wiring diargram to prove this car came without one from the factory! LOL

You dont need one but be careful starting the car in gear!
