No tailpipes or dumps

Is there anything wrong with not running tailpipes or dumps off of the back of the mufflers? I was just wondering if it would be dangerous to anything like the gas tank. Also will I lose any hp from this?

Well technically you could probably do it, but you would probably at least want to dump it so all that hot nasty exhaust would not be going straight up to the underside of your car and possibly causing problems. I'd say dump it at least.

I have run 2 cars with straight mufflers w/no dumps and no big issues other than you get a pretty strong exhaust smell in the car. Of course you would have that same issue with dumps.

did you like the way it sounded with just straight mufflers? Does it sound different at idle? Im just looking for a different sound than the one ive had for years. Also did you notice any power loss?

I have heard of road race guys actually boiling the fuel inside of the tank when running without dumps. But these cars are being ran balls to the walls for extended periods of time. I run just mufflers on my 95 with no issues but I don't have a gas tank since the cell sits in the trunk. I will say there is a difference in sound level if nothing else. My UltraFlo's are quite a bit louder without dumps on them.

i got my race bullets with no dumps or tailpipes. they sound deep and raspy as hell.

sound great.

Dumps are cheap and easy to install, so you might as well put them on.

I have heard of cars boiling the fuel even without being road raced using no dumps.

I say use dumps or have the chance of heating up your fuel and losing performance, possibly causing your car to blow up if it boils. Is it worth the risk for a different sound? Your call.

all the crap about boiling gas and heating up gear oil in the rearend i think is a LOAD OF CRAP!

i could believe it on hardcore road race cars like stated before, running HIGH rpms for a long time will produce alot of heat, but for a street driven and drag car i dont see a problem.

i ran flowmasters without dumps and currently have bullets without dumps. no problems at all.

you got to think.
once you nail on it, get the rpms up to made alot of exhaust gas going towards the back of the car, it wont take long till your going 50+mph and at that point there will be so much air rushing under the car, even if the gas tank heats up air is coming by and just taking the heat away at the same time.

i wouldnt worry about it.

Dump it or NOT!! There is no HP loss with dumps!! there are these advantages ( if you will) the exhaust from muffler straight out , or a short pipe is that the gas fumes will not exit under the car ( usually in front of the rear Axel, where most mufflers are located) and will seep inside the car.. stink/ CO/ ect.. The "dump or turn down will.. direct the exhaust fume away from under the car chassis, the turn downs will soften the exhaust note.. both are a good thing, unless the solid rumble and fumes is what you want!! Another thing I like to use, on the sat nite street runs ( oops.. we dont do that do we??) I have my dumps aimed at the rear tire tracks!! do a burn out and clean the dirt off the street at the same time, no you have a good tire AND a clean strip of asphalt to launch on.. Just dont idle too long in traffic on a hot day..lol hope this helps...

dads 86 has the same H-pipe and bullets with tail pipes...and the ugly turn downs deep and a little raspy

I've had my 68 with no dumps for 7 years, and the 90 with no dumps for 5 now, and had absolutely no problems, other than being able to smell exhaust when idling for long periods of time. The 90 is a daily driver too for my wife, and she has no problems with it.

IMHO, they sound way better that way anyway. Very deep.
