Don't understand the post - how could you mark the notch if there were no 'marks'? Are the degree markings missing or is the pointer that attaches to front cover bolts missing?

Never seen a balancer without marks. However, often it takes quite a cleaning (wire brush even) to uncover them.

cant see the timing marks on the ballancer, i marked the big notch in the balancer. i think they are painted over but, i really want to buy a good fluid damper. i just want to kick my timing down its set at 15 deg. i had someone set it for me last time . i want to kick it down to 11-12 for the winter to save a little gas

The 'notch' is there for car equipped with a crankshaft position sensor. Get down there and use a wire brush to find the timing marks. They are there.
