WHEN i give my car wot there is a noise like a metal slapping something or like a loud tic (kinda) but its more like a "tinging" noise.....i think its detonation timing is a 12* on 87 octane....any suggestions???

Thanks guys!!!!

Agreeed. If this is a new noise, it's likely detonation. As everyone said, back your timing down a couple degrees or up the octane.

Good luck.

Does anyone know how many degrees the stock timing can be bumped so that the car will still run safely on 87 octane? Sorry if I hijacked, im just lookin for a quick answer :)

There's no magic number - especially on these ping machines. State of tune, ambient temps, how well the MAF is functioning and many other factors play into it.

You will really just have to experiment. Keep bumping till you start to hear pinging and then back it down 1-2* if it's summertime (you might need more if you do this during the winter). There's a point where power goes down but pinging isnt heard by the human ear (the cars always ping - we just dont normally hear it). This is a reason to not run on the ragged edge of detonation.

Good luck.

one more thought on this problem, mine only does it when the motor is warmed up, if its cold and i give it wot it doesn't make any noise. Also whenthe motor is warmed all and I give it wot, the temp gauge goes up higher than it normally runs.....do u guys still think its detonation??

You are fortunate. Detonation has been the story of my ownership of the vehicle running 91 octane (The best you can get in California) and the stock ten degrees. No matter how many sensors I replace or how much seafoam I run through the thing it still pings.

i know im bringing up an old thread but i was just curios what seafoam is and what it will do?? thanks guys..

A search (on here or Google) will reveal more than you ever wanted to know.
It's just a top-end cleaner.

94MustangCobra is talking about plug heat ranges. Too cold and they foul, too hot and they begin to favor preignition.
