Noise on start up video

Every morning I go to start up my car when the engine is cold and something rattles. Can you tell what you think the noise is? It pretty much starts and runs good the rest of the day on every start after that.

It could be piston slap or rod knock. A lot of cars will do that on cold mornings. The oil might be having a hard timing getting to where it needs to go in the engine. What oil viscosity are you using? What brand oil, and what filter?

What filter.If its not a motorcraft then thats a issue.Most aftermarket filter allow the oil to drain back into the engine while its off.

I know i bought a thunderchicken because the guy thought it had a bad rod.Changed the oil and filter(to motorcraft) and never had anymore issues out of it in 50k miles.

Ford Motorcraft filter has the ADBV in the head or the base (I never remember which) and the others have it in the opposite place which causes the rattle with aftermarket filters.

Ahh yano i didn't even think about this. I had been using motocraft 5w20 but the last time I got an oil change I was so busy with everything I took it in to get it done not at ford but at an auto shop. What oil/filter would they have used? obviously not synthetic, but is that probably the problem? What oil SHOULD i be running? 5w20 is fine right?

5w20 is fine, but it's the filter that is most likely causing your knocking. What filter is installed?

Not sure what that shop used but I will do an oil change on it and see what It is. Im assuming something like fram then. That would make sense. Il get motocraft in there. Thanks guys.

thanks guys for the advice, switched it to motorcraft filter with mobil1 oil and it seems to have gone away from what I have noticed, and especially when driving, this hiss tick noise I had that sounded horrible is GONE. I think the guys I took it too didn't put enough oil in it either, it seemed extremely low.

FWIW, you don't have to use a motorcraft filter (though I do most of the time) .. Just be sure to use one with an anti-drainback valve in it. Most filters do have this but the cheap ones (fram, etc.) do not.

i have a fram with almost 1k on it. no problems here

fram filters are junk,i wouldnt use them on my mower.

cut a fram open and cut a motorcraft (made by puralator) filter open..

No compairsion.

ok guys been a while now and at first the noise seemed to be gone but now its back again. Any ideas on what It could be? It present on start up almost every time in the morning then it smooths out and runs pretty good basically. Now its also done it once or twice during the day too.

I'll vouch for a Motorcraft filter ADBV. My GT also rattled liked crazy on cold start for a second or two. I'd been using a "Wix" oil filter from my local NAPA for the last number of oil changes and I was told it had a good quality ADBV in it. On a whim and a day off, I went to Ford and grabbed a proper Motorcraft filter and went and changed the oil to some 5W40.

Since then I haven't heard the rattle on start. I'm convinced: Nothing but Motorcraft oil filters from now on.

I did change it to motocraft filter with mobil1 5w20. Noise is still occuring.

I'm a mechanic at a ford dealer, so everytime I change my oil in my 04 GT it gets a motorcraft FL820 filter and I use the new motorcraft fully synthetic 5w-20. I've never used anything else except motorcraft parts, and I STILL have the same knocking noise when I first start it up in the morning. Its just something I've learned to live with, although I just might try a lucas oil treatment at my next oil change to see if the that thick gunk helps it. I also noticed, if I tap the key a few times before I start it, it won't knock since the oil pump is "priming" the engine.

I should say that while I don't hear the rumble/rattle at start anymore, my 4.6 is still as noisy as hell. Sounds like a diesel and has what sounds to me to be a nasty little rattle/knock when under no load (not driving, not coasting, just "floating") between 3K and 4K RPM. When I drive away with the engine cold, if i dare rev it past 3K and get into that "float" mode, I also hear a knock/rattle. I don't hear any specific knock under load nor on the overrun...just when it's floating between the two.

Still makes good power and doesn't burn oil. Been noisy for years. I thought the no-load rattle might be piston slap but it does it warm too, which doesn't sound right for PS.

If you want to prime the oil system a bit before start, trying flooring the throttle to get the PCM in a "clear flood" mode before cranking. As long as the pedal is on the floor, the injectors won't fire and the engine won't start. Crank it for a few seconds to get some oil moving, release the throttle and it'll fire right up.

Works for me and is especially handy after an oil & filter change.

same thing here

used to only be on the coldest mornings...now it's every cold start-up
