I have a mustang for my daily driver. But also like to have some fun at night. When I race i just leave it in drive and don't redline her. shifts at alittle over 5000rpm. Will I get much performance gain if i keep her till after 6000rpm? Main reason I don't just try is b/c I don't like to beat my car to much

mine shifts at close to 6000 if I floor it.. not 5000 like your saying, but yes you will get better times if you slam it into gear yourself at a higher RPM..

I wouldn't take that advice...

You have a 97, which is a non PI car... correct me if I'm wrong anyone, but I don't think they rev quite as high as the newer PI motors, like WRXracer and myself have.

Leave it in drive, turn off the overdrive and traction control, hold the brake to 1000-1200rpms for the launch and then go. You can't shift faster than that computer, and revving higher does you no good if you're past your peak power point anyway.

yeah... you're so much more 133t than i am.

That was at a track at 2700ft above sea level... using "basic" conversion, which i don't list because so many people bitch about it, its a 14 flat. thats not taking anything into account like barometric pressure on that night, etc.
If I had all the proper **** to calculate the conditions, and posted my corrected time like so many people who internet race do, it would be much lower.

might i add that was also before the CAI, TB, and catback.

good thinking but, his is a 97. higher rpms = less power, it's like stepping on it and not getting anything else. waste of time running out to the rev limiter @ 6250.

well i already answered the rev limit, and shifting past 6000 is a time killer. the best launch you can do for a 97 non-pi is a low rpm shift 1500-2000. that's where the grunt is.

no, what we're saying is to launch at that speed... you do this through the same procedue you would do a burnout with an automatic. basically 2 foot it off the line.

hold your left foot on the brake and use your right on the gas to get the engine to 1500-2000 rpms... the point before your tires start spinning is where you want to be. you'll feel the back end rear up under the strain. when the light goes green, get off the brake and floor it. this allows for a better power point to take off from than a dead stop.

Tires will usually break loose at 1800 I believe. On a Non PI car there really isn't much top end power so I would say just let the tranny do the work.

Yeah thanks for the reassurance. My gtech times said it was slower even when i took it 300rpm further. I just didn't know b/c everyone is always saying how inaccurate these things are. I guess maybe it was worth the $300 for the gtech pro comp.

it feels that my car performs better when i shift it myself. havent gone to the track to test it, but i can definetly feel the difference. I just make sure i put the shifter into the next gear ~500rpms BEFORE i want it to shift since it takes it a second to shift. By shifting it 500rpms before i want it to, it helps ALOT. just flooring it in 'D', the car shifts too soon, but this way, i get it to shift exactly where i want it to

Yeah like they said above you have 99+ car so they seems to be able to make better power at higher rpms. Where is mine peaks and drops off at... 4000 i think

Ok, I tried to read the other posts and in doing so, I was left amazed. Here I am late at night, half asleep, and yet, I see a huge problem here.

Your car is an automatic and you plan on racing it quite frequently, yet, no one has made mention of a transmission cooler ? I suggest you get one of these if you don't wish to fry your transmission.

As for shifts, your stock shift points will be fine. Higher rpms for a car like yours is pointless since you have the pre 99-04 cylinder head and cam setup. If you are looking for firmer shifts, I suggest getting a good shift kit like the well-known "Jerry mod" most of us 4r70w automatic guys use. For more information on the Jerry mod, go to www.tccoa.com and read up on their tech articles for the 4r70w automatic transmission. I'de also recommend getting a good computer tune from some place like Superchips Tuning Inc.

The advice given above about "foot-braking" is a tricky subject. Some people benefit from holding in the brake and reving up the car for launch and others have had bad results with it. If you can afford it, just get a higher stall torque converter and be done with it.

When racing, be sure to take traction control and o/d off, especially at the track. Last thing you want to do is shift into o/d at wide-open throttle. That will blow the o/d band for certain.
