safety point, make sure that you place a floor jack under front A arm on the side ur working on, when replacing struts if u don't the spring can jump out and possibly kill you!!!

The difference is that a strut, in addition to being a shock absorber, is also a locating link in the suspension and a plain old shock isn't. So, the front struts in a Mustang are the upper link in the suspension, working with the lower control arms to keep the wheels where they belong whereas the shocks in the back do nothing but dampen spring action.
