Hey everyone, Im new to this forum, and new to the mustang scene. Well I made a rookie mistake here... I looked at a guys "97 Cobra" and everything seemed legit. But I was in a hurry, and didnt really check the engine over well, so I picked it up. Brought it home, and it just didnt feel like the 305hp its supposed to be. So when I got some free time, I decided to check things out... Well I popped the valve covers off just to find a SOHC instead of the DOHC that was supposed to be there. The body is surely a cobra, but I obviously assume the motor was changed. I got a good deal on it either way, so no big loss, but you can understand how upsetting it is and how many times I feal like pounding my head against a wall! :nonono: lol. But anyway, I noticed the heads had casting numbers that read F1AE-6B280-DC Can anyone explain to me which heads those are, and can you tell me where to locate any casting numbers to identify what motor it is exactly. Any feedback is GREATLY appreciated!

Well I didnt buy it, I traded for it. So Im pretty much screwed, but the motor in it is healthy n' everything. And its still better than the car I gave for it.

What is the 8th digit of the VIN number? For the 1997 Mustang

V6 3.8 "4"
V8 4.6 SOHC "W" (later model PI Mustang "X").
V8 4.6 DOHC "V"

This will help you figure out if you really have a GT that someone put on body kits to make it look like a Cobra .

what do you mean if by non mustang "w". just curious cause mines a mustang and is a w for the engine code. and to the op you better check the car over again and pull the vin num from the door jamb or the chassi some where. cause by the looks of it someone went through a grave deel of time swap a 4v in for a 2v. badges and bidy kit dont mean its a real cobra hell look at mine. almoust looks like a salvage rebuild.

Yes they did make them with COP bolt holes and aluminum crossovers http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/96-9...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

I go by the runners and it's hard to tell but the first runner looks like it goes to the passenger side meaning it's non-pi. The fuel rails are from a Non-pi engine you can tell by the fuel feed position, the alt is from a non pi engine, the coil packs. Those are Romeo heads and romeo heads on came out on 96-98 gt and 01.5-04 gt. The 96-98 had push in pvc and the 01.5-04 had twist in pcv. The pic shoes push in. I would need better pics to be for sure.
