I figure someone on this board will know: It was 109 degrees here in Sacramento yesterday, my wifes 99 Caravan's AC can't seems to keep up. Anyone have experience with servicing the freon with one of the bottles you can get at the parts stores like Kragen? Is it a matter of just hooking it up and servicing or is it more complicated?
I'm 99% sure it's R-134.

I'm actually planning on getting an F-250 with a deisel but not till the stang is paid off.

Anyone know the answer to my question??

all ive heard about the OTC(over the counter) Rechargers is they dont fully recharge the system or something like that.

imo id just have a shop do it, shouldnt be more than like 100 bucks and youll know its done right. then again, it could be other things like the actual compressor going out, that maybe the shop will know and you wouldnt have wasted the 30 bucks for the OTC recharge kit nad it still have been hot air since that was not the problem.

A 99 model is going to be R134a, half of 94 and 95-up is R134a.
Just go down to your local parts store and get the recharge kit, the one with the hose and gauge( around 10-15 bucks). Start the car/van up, turn on the A/C on high. Locate the lowside fitting( should have a blue cap), connect the gauge and see how low you are. Add freon as needed.

Just make sure you don't overcharge the system, you will blow hot air out of the vents.


BTW does it blow cold going down the road, say at 55-60mph?
If so it could be a couple of other things wrong, and I'll explain more if needed. Let me know....

If it is low on freon the compressor will kick on and off alot. Maybe on for 10-15 seconds then back off. If it isn't doing that than it is possible it is something else.
