Im set on gears being the next mod. I had that pounded into my head last week when I went to the track.

So, theoretically we know "4.10 FTW".

But, at the strip assuming traction is there, is a set of 3.73's or 4.10's gonna make the car cross the line first?

Which ratio sets it in the powerband the most for that 1/8th or 1/4 mile...?

Only drawback I see to 4.10's is if I one day have enough power to start running out of gear at the track.

Or possibly something I dont know, like it requires a shift to 4th gear whereas 3.73's will let you cross in 3rd... that costs 1/10ths during the shifts also.

Right now the car is as it is in my signature. I dont really know whats in the future for it, but its a pretty safe bet it wont see any forced induction any time soon. If a miracle occurs it will see a set of cams and maybe longtubes.

So whats the best gear for the strip assuming traction is there (dont have a problem with that, DR's are on hand)?

Not asking about mpg or what im going to be taching down the highway, so hopefully its not another dreaded gear thread.

We need to know the exact size tire you will be running, then we can make some calculations.

Right now 245/45/17's.

Im tossing around the idea of getting some new wheels, still 17's. If so im going deep dish in the rear, so probaly at least a 295/40 (or 35..?)/17.

The DR's I ran on were 275/60/15's.

With the stock 3.27's my almost stock gt crossed the traps screaming at redline, I don't think you will be able to avoid shifting into 4th with 3.73's

After I installed the 4.10's I was in 4th through the traps.

With your 275/60/15 DR's, 4.10 gear, and assuming you will be shifting at 6000 RPM's:

1st gear - 36 MPH
2nd gear - 62 MPH
3rd gear - 92 MPH
4th gear - 122 MPH

why not do 3.90's like i did? they will let you run 117 in 4th so when you do get a power adder you wont have to shift into 5th in the 1/4.

BTW we are headed to fayetteville this sunday if you're up for a race

Thanks for the numbers guys.

Saleen, ive been tossing around 3.90's but told that 4.10 is the absoloute way to go on a N/A 2v 4.6, as I think we've all heard... lol.

I really dont hit the drag strip that much, but when I do id like something thats gonna work well and not be overkill.

I dont know, so confusing. Its down to either 3.90's or 4.10's I guess.

4.10's definitely!! you won't be able to avoid 4th with 3.73's and all of those calculators give you an "Estimate" they are not exact.

It is hard to be exact when the tire diameter / circumference will constantly change as the tire is used. Also this is the MPH at a given RPM. The MPH you get after 1/4 mile run is an average over the last xx feet.

You will have a hard time finding traction on the street with a 4.10 gear. You don't want those Civic's taking you off the line because you are sitting there spinning do you? And like mentioned above, if you ever plan on going with a power adder, you do not want to have to grab 5th before the traps. 3.90 is the perfect street/strip gear on a 5 speed.

Of course these calculations are not exact, but they are close enough to give somebody a good idea of which gear to go with. And like Stan mentioned, your trap speed is not your actual speed as you cross the through the traps, it is your average speed over the last 66 feet before the traps.

I wont be running DR's as normal tires, not enough life.

I have traction problems with the 3.27's so I know anything upgrading is going to be a handfull, lol.

Now im leaning back to 3.90's just when I had been swayed to 4.10's. Its ok, I have a little time to think it over.

Also, I do alot of highway travel, and I have the T45 trans which has a higher 5th gear ratio than the 3650 does.

I would do the 4.10s still there is not that big of a difference between 4.10s and 3.90s.

As far a DRs go on life, if you dont roast them all the time the Nitto DRs are good up to 15,000+ miles.

If you don't heat cycle them, yes. If you properly heat cycle the tire it will remain nearly as soft as the day you bought it (that means more traction). If you don't, they will harden up and wear down more slowly. My buddy got 12k miles outa MT et street radials on his goat because he daily drove them. And there is just as big a difference between 4.10's and 3.90's as there is 3.55's and 3.75's. You might not see a huge difference going from one to the other, but when going from stock gearing you sure will.

Im not sure...I just know that 3.73s were NOT enough with the cams on the TRACK. On the street, i LOVED them....perfect gear for me because if I wanted to, I could wind out to well over 120MPH.

I guess im going to have to say 3.90s.....I WAS wanting 4.10s, but im SOOOO glad I didnt because of the TTs going on. I would have to pull them RIGHT back out.
