My friend bought his 93 gt with those on there and we caught a light with a cop next to us. He looked over and mentioned that the taillights were illegal and luckily he let us go when my friend told him the car was just purchased a couple days ago. It's a little less obvious than tinted front windows so a little less chance getting pulled over with these...
There are imports around here who have those on there honda's, nissans. etc. no problems. I think alot depends on what you're doing. When I was 17 and had my first 5.0, the Police pulled me over because they "couldn't see my sales sticker registration #", and because "my front windows had around a 45% tint" less than most suvs privacy glass tint. while other 4 bangers where running around with 5% on the front. At 22, 3 years with no stang I bought my second within 1 week I was pulled over for doing 7 over the speed limit.--Sold the car 2 weeks later. Now, I seem to have no problems modifying my other vehicles. I think it depends on two things. 1.) where you live. (big city with bigger problems, small town with bored cops. 2.) Are you a "dumb kid" with a loud exhaust who likes to street race?. If you aren't out driving around with a 2 1/2 exhaust all over town at 2:30 in the morning I would think no biggie. If you like to cruise all over town in the middle of the night for hours on end, or if the local cops are looking for a reason to pull you over, I'd say stay away. Just my thoughts.
The cops will leave you alone until they need a reason to pull you over. Example: It's 11:30 PM on Friday night. You're just driving along doing everything you're supposed to be doing. Using turn signals, headlights on, obeying the speed limit. Five-Oh gets up behind you and wants to take a sniff of your breath. He needs probable cause to pull you over. Your tail lights give it to him.
A buddy of mine used to have to leave for work at 2 AM. On his drive to work he had to drive through a bad part of town. 2:30 one morning the cops were everywhere on his ride in. Five-Oh got up behind him and pulled him over for a clear license plate cover. He said they went over him and his truck with a fine tooth comb. The only thing they did was give him a ticket for the cover.
Don't give them a reason to pull you over and they won't. Pure and simple.

ya, these laws are getting/are rediculous. I can understand if someone is driving along with strobe lights blaring all over his/her car giving people siezures and stuff, but other than that whats the big deal if someone smokes their taillights? Headlights I can understand, cause thats just dumb at night time, but I see smoked taillights all the time and I have no problem seeing thru them at all.

The guy who did this was pulled over and arrested because of a minor vehicle violation. When it was realized who he was he was tried, convicted and put to death.

The police seize major amounts of weapons, drugs, wanted felons and terrorists on minor traffic stops. That is why they pull you over for, what may seem to you, relatively nothing.
While you guys may think it is a pain in the rear to be pulled over think about it from the officer's point of view. Unless he knows you he doesn't have a clue of what he is getting into. 55 percent of police officers that are killed "on duty" are killed during a routine traffic stop.
