Not dot approved tail lights

I have had those lights on my car for two years and been pulled over plenty of times for other stuff but never even asked about the tail lights. just put red bulbs in em. and be sure to epoxy them in place because there is a lot better chance of getting them stolen then getting a ticket for them.

when i bought my beater it had clear taillights on it i used to get pulled over all the time for. One cop told me to go to autozone and buy the reflective red license plate bolts which i did i never was pulled over again.

Those smoked tail lights DO have a reflective strip on them... it's just not red.

Therefore it's illegal.


It's the same deal with clear corners. You can use amber bulbs all you want, they still need to have a reflective AMBER peice in them. Any other color is not legal.

But it all depends on the cop if you get stopped for them.

Some states with strict imspections will not pass you either.

Don't give them a reason to pull you over and they won't. Pure and simple.

I call bullsh it. ESPESIALLY if you live in jersey

once you get pulled over once or twice in the same area you are done. I have cops follow me, no wait, RIDE MY ASS for miles and miles. once I had a cop follow me for over 6 miles and right when I got near the next district he pulled me over. apparently I was "swerving" and I had 2 passengers will tell you that is a lie. the cop asked me if I had been drinking that night and started harrassing me on how he will get a roadside sobriety test and I will be in SOOOOO much trouble. at this point I was getting really pissed but I kept cool. so I pulled his bs card and TOLD him to give me a breathalizer. he wouldn't do it. he evetually went back to his car, came back, gave my car a roadside inspection, found nothing to hit me with, went back to his car for like 20min, came back and "let me off with warning" for swerving.

I have many stories like that from new jersey.

slightly off topic: once I got pulled over for having my lisence plate light out. I ended up with 7 tickets and my car got impounded. I missed half of a semester of colledge and got fired from my job over this. his basis for toeing the car was that he said my insurance was expired. the date was good and it was right on the card, I brought that same card to my insurance agent in person and they said there was nothing wrong with insurance card or my insurance policy or anything. in court or the 7 tickets the only 2 hat held water was the lisence plate light ticket and the seatbelt ticket. becouse of that event, I had to dropout of an entire semester of collage(I paid for 16 credits out of pocket mind you), lost my job, had to pay out my ass to get my car back, and had to do a sh itload of walking

It's a reference to the old TV show, Hawaii 5-0. You know, Steve Magarret and Dano. I drive a 5-point-0 and the cops are five-oh.

And dont forget the 5.0 coupes alot of highway patrols used before. That is another reason why. In cali we called them "5-oh" because of the emblems on the side. Easy to spot....

ever actually follow a car with clear or smoked taillights, with just red bulbs? it SUCKS. the dim-ness factor is huge, brake lights arent 1/2 as visable as they are with stockers or even altezzas (which are legal because there is actually a full red light in there, its the same principle as deleting the stock taillights for a custom setup (custom lowrider pickups have this alot...ever see a chevy truck with corvette style tallights in the roll pan?)

i remember the first time i ever saw a honda with the cleared-out tails. all you could see when he hit the brakes was a little red dot in the middle of them...

i just purchased these.. they are not dot approved.. do you think cops will notice or care about them??

A friend of mine had those on and he was pulled over. As other's have said it depends on the particular cop. If you've got other things on your car like off road exhaust, slicks etc that you don't want the law to notice I'd recommend not drawing attention to yourself with those lights. Just my 2 cents.
And Nutcase, you're 100% right, I had cops riding my ass in Red Bank, NJ when I was doing the speed limit. It was like he wanted me to speed up to get him off my ass so he could give me a ticket.

The police seize major amounts of weapons, drugs, wanted felons and terrorists on minor traffic stops. That is why they pull you over for, what may seem to you, relatively nothing.

You've got a point, that's how we operated in Baghdad, Iraq with traffic control points and it was quite successful. That being said I think the major beef here is the police targeting "stupid kids in fast cars".

I've had cops tailgate me before, I just pull to the side and let them pass. Once I pulled into a parking lot, he followed me in and came to my door. He asked why I pulled over. I told him I wanted to change the cd I was listening to. He couldn't do much because I was parked and he didn't pull me over.

Another thing that bothers me is the Lexus RX300 taillights. They went from being red like normal lights, to altezza style, now they are clear. No red reflector anywhere on the back at all. Red LED's light up when the brakes are on but other then that you are looking at crystal clear lights with a chrome reflector. Its a bitch on sunny days.
