Not sure whats going on-Fluid Build Up On Rear Bumper/Trunk Lid

I dont know where its comming from. It seems like everytime after I take my car on the highway my rear bumer/trunk lid gets sprayed with some dark fluid. I dont know if its my rear main seal blowing oil back there or if it is my rear end.

I just replaced my diff. cover with a T/A cover. After doing it 3 times myself I finally sent it to a shop. It kept leaking on me. After a few times at the shop they realized that the breather hole (tell me if this is B/S because I need to know if Im getting screwed) was rusted shut- limiting venting and causing excess rear axle pressure.

I am laying off my car until I get some replies from you guys and you guys only.

I hear gear chime-for a while its been only when im in low rpms in 6th but now its in the low rpms in 5th (below 2500rpms near a jersey barrier or hard wall). It is a whining noise, thats the best I can describe it.

I am doing an oil change this week, I also will be checking the rear end out-specifically measuring the rear end fluid level. What else should I check?
Also when I go around corners there is a choppy noise-leading me to believe that the rear end is at fault.

However when I shift gears the gear shifts are choppy. Sometimes I need to really slam the shifter into gear. Could this be two problems in one?

I really dont want to have trany problems-this one killed my bank account. However if its my rear end its a little bit better. I didnt want to do any more mods to the rear end but if its toast then whatever...I'm going to have to suck it up.

If you have a rear main seal leak, you should be able to see it coming out of the back of the engine.

check the seal on the back of the transmission where the driveshaft slides in...low transmission fluid would make it hard to shift.

i had the same prob......dirty black residue all over the back of my car.....turns out the the seal and tailshaft bushing in my trans was bad.....might look at that

I had the same problem after my Trickflow install. The oil was getting sucked through the PCV and out the motor. This of course left the residue on the back bumper.

i would crap everywhere if your rear main managed to pull that off.

The axle vent thing is true. It's 12 bucks or so from the dealership and had to be ordered when I got mine. I'd have expected fluid loss at the ends of the axles too though.

You could hit the car wash, clean things up underneath, blast it a time or two on the way home and then get under and look. Maybe you can trace a fresh fluid trail.

I have the feeling also that it's the trans or the diff (given your recent issues). Let's hope so because after the Tubgirl thing, I dont want Allan to have to do anything he mentioned above.

I'm going to clean it up then look for fluid. Should I expect a leak with the trany I've got (D&D t56 about 2yrs old). Would a rear trany leak be expensive to fix?
It has been a little bit harder to shift lately so I have had to delay putting it into gear.

I am hoping that its the rear end again. I hear a clunking/chattering noise when I go around corners- I am starting to think that after 11yrs its cooked.

When I go on the highway and get close to the jersey barriers on the drivers side I can hear gear whine. So that sucks because its something with gears in it probablly getting really hot.

How do I check my (manual) trany fluid level?
After doing the rear end 3 times I should know how to check it out!

Any fluid leaking under the car will end up coating the bumper and trunk lid. When the air flows under the car, it picks up leaking fluid and basically vaporizes the fluid. the air flows out the back of the car and swirls up, thus coating the trunk lid & bumper. Happened to a buddy of mine in an old minivan - he had a tranny leak out the back seal, and it ended up all over the back of the van.

Chattering while turning can be not enough friction modifier in the rear end fluid.

Definately check the trans level and rear end fluid level.

If a T56 is like a T5, there's a fill plug on the side of the trans (on a T5, it's the passenger side) that comes out when you use a 3/8" ratchet wrench head in it's recepticle.

How do I tell if my trany has enough fluid in it?
What or where is the indicator?

ok, with out seeing the actual mess it could be a number of things. Some times water up around the rear window trails down around the trunk lid drain channel and puts out a delta out from under the taillights\license plate. Oh ya see it all the time..stangs collect alot of black sootydust there.

i wish it was water, but i know its not. i am dropping it off at my buddies shop tonight. i am going to spray it down today before work, drive it hard after work and hopefully the fluid will show up granted there is any left.

on the bright side i am moving to royal purple fluids all around! oil, trany(if i can find it), and diff.
what is the best fluid for a manual trany?
