notchback guys speaker inquiry

what size speaker you end up installing in the back?
Been doing some searches anyone get a 6X9 in there?
I havent tried to crawl in the trunk yet to see what the deal is and why so many have trouble installin a speaker of that size so I fugured Id ask.

Pics would be apprecited.
I would like to not cut thru the rear deck carpet though.

The stock ones are the same size as a gt.

Take the back seat out and they are alot easer to get to.

coupe they go in the rear deck I have room frmo the trunk also.

For some reason many say they put the stocks one back in..In the past on many other cars i was able to squeeze in 6x9's just wanted to hear some others feedback to get a lil jump on it and see what the problems were

it looks to me like you'd have to cut the bracing to fit 6x9's in there

Rears are either 5"x7" or 6x8", depending on the brand you get (some 5x7's, like Pioneer, have a larger surround that allows them to be used in 6x8's specifically for Fords n' Mazdas and stuff).

I fit 6x9's in the back of my last notch by just pre-marking the mounting holes, drilling 3 of them, and using nylon 1/4" spacers between the speakers and the rear deck to give the cone enough room to move without hitting the deck because of the weird-shaped stock speaker opening. Sounded just fine, although it's a PITA to hold the speaker up by yourself and get those screws started without dropping stuff.

Maybe it's a '79-86 thing but my car has 6x9 in it. They're Pioneer...i don't know how far the Ford/Pioneer thing goes back but they might even be factory.

I have Eclipse 6x9s in my 93 coupe. They are installed exactly like Darkwriter stated. I did add a little bit of foam on top of the existing foam on the speaker so it sealed up nice to the bottom of the deck.

The 6x9 Sony Xplode speakers I put in the notch have great treble and mid, but NO bass whatsoever. They sounded MUCH better in the '90 Town Car into which I first installed them. I just threw 'em in the notch because I still had 'em and they sounded clearer than the Lightning Audio 6x8's I tried in there for awhile.

In hindsight, I would've been better off getting some Pioneer 6x8's (had those in a prior notch, loved the way they sounded) or some other quality brand in the stock size. Aside from brand selection, there's really not that big a sound difference between 6x8's and 6x9's.

I really like my Eclipse stuff. Im not sure of the model number but they are the the 3 way 6x9s. They actually have nice mid bass to them. The 6.5" door speakers do too. Everything in the car is Eclipse. For being 4 or 5 years old now they still sound crisp and clear.

well i just installed some infinity reference speakers in my notch this morning and i love the way they sound and the back 5 x 7 's fit perfect in the stock location.

YEP!! The "Ford-MAzda speakers work excellent!! They sound great too. I have them in the front of my Cobra and they blew away my stock Mach 460 speakers. I am installing them in my 81 notch when I get the interior ready for installation.

I highly recommend going with Pioneer Ford/Mazda 5X7's.

BTW...My 91 notch has original front dash speakers, no door speakers for some reason, and original deck speakers and the ORIGINAL AM-FM-CASSETTE.

It sounds terrible! You can't even hear it on the freeway with the windows down!!

I need to, but I just want to leave my black car alone. It isn't an original 5.0L or anything it's a 4cyl car, but it is very clean as I just sprayed it in 2006.

I will do my 81 first, and see how it sounds, but then again I have all the 2001 wiring and radio in that car.
