Notebook Computers... which one?

Dells are a pretty sure bet, but Sony Vaios are nice too.
I had and recently sold a Dell P3 lappy and it was a great lappy.

yeah. 512 mb ram and the remote for the dvd player. the ram upgrade is highly recommended, especialy for me because i'm a software developer and developer studio and sql server take up a lot of ram.1105 said:

For reliability and portability, the IBM and Toshiba laptops are probably the best. I work on computers all the time and I have never heard anyone having a problem with one of those. I constantly get people with problems with their Dell, Compaq (a lot), and eMachines. Dells are really overrated, their customer service blows and if you think their laptops are reliable then you should check the hundreds, if not thousands, of complaints on their message boards. If you're going to be carrying around the laptop then you want a lighter one because if you're carrying it with your books and stuff it'll get pretty heavy. For around $1,500 you can get a pretty good IBM or Toshiba.
I agree Dell isn't the best in laptops but they do offer a very good quality piece and service for the price you pay. I would also agree that IBM is the best followed by a few others closely. Bottom line any major brand notebook is a good choice and the prices are falling. If you buy Dell through the educational program you get the express service plan that is "supposed to be better" havent had to call them yet. Shop around alot and you can get a great deal on a puter but the best prices in the end come directly from the manufactures.

I have had a gateway (crapway), dell inspiron 8100, and just bought a Toshiba satellite for 999 at comp usa. The toshiba is a 2.8 Celeron DVD/CD-RW, 512mram Intel 3G video card, 40G HD. It loads faster than my desktop that has 768 mb ram.

I just purchased my Toshiba satellite A45S250 from Circuit City for $1150 (after rebates) and it seems great so far. The major knocks on the toshiba from where I have read seem to be speaker and screen quality but honestly I don't see the problem with either.
The comp itself has a 2.8 GHz pent 4, 512 MB Ram, 60 GB HD, DVD burner, 802.11g wireless, 32 MB video & Windows XP Home. It seems to fly through most anything I put it through, too. So far, I am more than pleased, and even though I was a little concerned about just 32 MB of video mem, it seems to play DVDs very well.

Alienware makes great PC's that are really fast, but they are extremely expensive. They are definitely near the bottom of the "price to performance ratio" totem pole. There is a guy that hangs out in the House of Pain that spent $3,500 on a P4 3.06 GHz PC that I could have built for 1/2 the price or less. I presume their laptops are similarly overpriced...
