hey guys,
ok so after i replaced my intake manfold gaskets my car is burning about a court of oil every 2 tanks or so.....this sucks! Any ideas? I hope i dont have to get a rebuild... Engine isnt too hold, i think its rebuilt and has around 70k miles on it so i know it shouldnt be burning oil like this. Could i have messed something up when putting the manfiolds back on?

Did you get a new pcv valve? You might be pulling oil through the pcv valve. Also, do you have a cam and what intake?

im with Fred - how is the PCV?
how are compression (wet vs dry) or leakdown test results?

yea i did get a new pcv valve, and you know what, before it didnt have one and the hose that was supposed to go to it was capped off....this is wierd, someone purposely capped it off....what is going on here? Why would it be pulling oil up through it and what can i do?

my buddy with an 99gt was having the same problem as you....when i was driving behind him i could see and smell the oil commin out his exhaust....he replaced his pcv (screen, rubber gromet, and valve) and the whole problem went away.good luck man

yea i just replaced the grommet and valve, didnt do the screen, could the screen really be my problem though? I mean why would the screen have anything to do with why its suckin up oil?

I replaced everything and got the problem... I think my problem is worse b/c of my cam choice pulling more vacuum at idle. When I had my lower intake off the car I bent the cover that's under the pcv valve. To check and see if you are actually pulling the oil through the pcv valve, pull off the hose that goes to the lowest part of the upper intake (on my car the pcv valve has a line going to the driverside back of the upper). Let me know how this works out and I can tell you some options you can try...

yea theres a little oil inside the hose, i guess thats my problem, how the hell do i fix something like this? I mean as far as i know i dont have a performance cam or anything...could i just have some vacuum hoses routed wrong or something?

I'll look for the post on the corral later that had more info on this, but I need to do some school work first.

Anyways, you can try the breather route and see if this helps. Replace the pcv valve with a breather and plug where the vacuum line would go into the upper intake. You will also need to put a breather on the valve cover and plug the line that goes into the side of the throttle body. This would be the first and "cheapest" route.

I don't suggest plugging the pcv valve all together because this can cause built up pressure in the crankcase. This will lead to premature gaskets failure.

There is another option that some people have tried but I have not. They ran a line into a catch can for the oil then ran another line out and back to the upper intake. It seems like it would work fine but finding a place for the catch can might not be so easy. Let me know if this helps.

wait do i need to drill a hole in my valve covers? I thought you meant something else. Im actually looking at buying a new set of edelbrock chrome valve covers so i can probably get a set with breathers already on them.

There's no drilling required for the breather. It's the passenger side valve cover's oil cap. You push a breather on there instead and plug both lines for the vacuum.

Are you actually having oil smoke out the exhaust or just assuming that the oil is being ingested/burnt by the engine? Being that you've just changed your intake manifold gaskets(I'm assuming both upper and lower), the lower gasket may be leaking oil at the rear of the engine. I know i've personally seen a few 5.0's with aftermarket intakes that have had this problem.

well i dont have a leak, im pretty confident of that, and since i found oil in the line that was supposed to go to the pcv valve that was capped off im pretty confident that that is my problem. Since i have put a new pcv valve on and uncapped that line the original problem someone tryed to fix by cappin that line off is occuring again. I think im gonna put a needle valve in between the vacuum line from the valve cover to the throttle body. I read someone else did that and it helped a lot to keep pressure in the crankcase thus reducing the oil consumption.
