O/D light flashing!

guys/girls,

Just bought a 98 4.6l muzzie over in in sunny (who am i kidding!!!!) england, and my O/d light has started flashing 3 times now over the past week, now from diggin around ive found out that it is a tranny error that causes the light to do it BUT from all the threads ive dug up on here already when people have it start to flash the behaviour of the car cahnges, mine doesnt!

It still changes gear fine, its still as quick, i can turn O/D on and off still and if i stop the car and then restart the engine its gone and wont cmoe abck for a while! any ideas on this guys?? maybe its just a sensor or the o/d fuse or switch is broken etc etc, if its not flashing will it still through up an error code if i plug a diagnostic puter into it???

if you plug in a scan tool, you should be able to pull the codes for the trans...happened to me, the codes told me that there was not a change in rpms from 2nd to 3rd gear change. To fix this I flushed the trans, filled back with fluid, and dropped some trans conditioner in....No problems to report here

My O/D light started flashing when my speedometer stopped working. Turns out it was a broken speedometer gear

if i do have to change the tranny fluid, what kind?? just general purpose stuff or what?? light came back again today but i stopped toget fuel and it went! grrrr

Use MERCON V or synthetic tranney oil. You can use the general purpose stuff but if the traney start to shudder, then you will definately need Mercon or synthetic. Don't forget to clean the magnet on the pan and change the filter. You may want to also do the J-mod while you are at it since you will have drained the fluid out of the pan. don't forget to drain the torque converter ... you will need about 12 quarts of fluid.

your transmission slipped. it may have been so slight that you don't even notice, but the sensor does. do as others suggest and flush the transmission.
