I've had my electric fan for about 3 weeks and I got some problems. The fan works great, but I am using the red/green stripe wire that runs from the ignition coil as the power when running.(I think thats where the wire is from) When I turn the key to the on position the fuel pump comes on as usual, and the fan comes on and keeps running, then i turn the key to start, it works as normal. I am not good with wiring diagrams, so I am asking if someone could tell me EXACTLY which wire i should use and where, so the fan comes on only after the engine is running.

well unless you have some kind of temp controller on the fan it's going to come on when you turn the key i believe, what kind of fan is it??....i just read your sig.....it's a lincoln fan.........probably need a temp controll for the fan, and i think theres a thing called a dcc controller for that fan they say is best to use for wiring it into your system.......i'll let the wiring experts coment on that one.....

I forgot what wire I used but I went to the ignition switch harness and found what was powered only in the run position and not the on position. Just take a test light and look for one that is going to be at the end of the harness closest to you, the driver. Make sure you use relays in the setup however! Either use a setup with a manual switch so you can control the on/off operation, a temp/thermostat control setup, or the variable voltage output control like the DCC controller mentioned.

As said, the DC unit is the way to go.

Otherwise, using a key-on switched source going into your positive relay coil terminal (terminal 86, etc) should do it.

I would have a switch in series in this somewhere, or run a separate relay to shut down the fan when the starter interlock circuit is hot (so the fan is not trying to start up while you are cranking).

Good luck.

But mostly all are entirely controlled by the ECU these days.

The mark viii fans draw some hefty amounts of power...id definately recommend the dccontrol fan controller. kinda pricey, but its a nice unit.

If you are on a limited budget, try this:

It uses a relay to turn the fan on and off, and uses the computer's temp sense to trigger the fan. It isn't adjustable in terms of temp to turn the fan on and off, but it is cheap. All you need is some 10 gauge wire for the fan power & ground, a 30 amp fuse and some 18 gauge wire for the relay coil wiring.

See http://fordfuelinjection.com/files/A9L_E-Fan_How-to.pdf for the full tech writeup. You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Because of the current draw, you should have a relay in your circuit. JR's diagram is good .. it shows power being pulled directly from the battery and going through a switch (relay) then to the fan. The relay is just a switch that goes on and off when told to (electric current) by the source of your choice .. most likely an ignition circuit. You can also hook into the a/c circuit so the fan will come on instantly if running a/c. Lastly, you can get a mechanical thermostat that goes into the fins of the radiator and it will also act as a switch in series with the ignition switch to tell the relay when to go on and off.
