odd request/ supercharger help

Hey guys, maybe you can help.

I know its not a mustang but i figured if any body would know you guys would.

I have a 240sx with a infinity q45 4.5 liter v8 stuffed in, i recently purchased a vortech v2 off of a 4.6 02 stang and am in the process of custom making the brackets for it, and was hoping you guys could point me in the direction for pulley size to reach my goal of 6-8 psi.

specs on the motor are
4.5 l v8 with 4v dohc
crank pulley 6.5 inches, it has the usual intake headers and dual 3 inch exhaust with xpipe.

motor currently makes 285 whp with a 7000rpm redline, do you guys have any idea and or point me in the right direction to figure the upper pulley size?

thanks for the help guy, i guess we will find out later next week, the sc is on and im just waiting on my tuned ecu, i left the 3.6 pulley on there, i hope it doesnt go over 8 psi

Yeah, that's pretty sweet. That engine sure has an interesting layout for its intake manifold...

Hopefully that supercharger bracketry is more reliable and robust than it first appears.
 
thanks, believe it or not i called vortech technical support and i was told " i have no clue". As for the brackets its made out of 1/2 stainless steel round bar, its on there nice and tight, and it has 4 pick up points and a 5th one on top its just missing from the picture.
 
Follow my logic here....
The motor is similarly size/design to an 03/04 Mach 1. I'm guessing it's a bit less effecient since it makes a bit less power than those. It has a smaller crank pulley than a Mustang as well and revs a little higher. Si if a 3.6" pulley makes 8-10psi on the Mach 1 at 6500, then I would guess you'll see 12-14psi at 7K on your motor with that pulley.

Disclaimer...I could be completely wrong too. :D

I think you are going down the right path. From the looks of the engine in the OP's pics, it looks like a VH45DE which came in the 89-96 Q45. Very similar engine to the Mach 1. I don't know how strong their internals are however. Factory crank HP rating of 278HP I think?

The later 02+ Q45's VK45DE makes 340HP crank HP and 333 TQ. Badass little V8. Shame nobody makes off the shelf blower kits for them.


If it was me, i'd choose pulley sizes to stay conservative during the initial fabrication and tune. I'd try and stay in the low PSI range just to get things tuned correctly, and then i'd start reducing pulley sizes on the head unit.

well i thought i should update this, took the car for a ride tonight, left on the pulley that came with it (3.6 inch) and it hit 8 psi a few times and once 9 psi, at 7000rpm. id like to be at 6-7 for now till i can get the tuning sorted out, what do you guys recomend.

great ride. I think that the reason why people weren't able to help is that a blower can spin and flow a set amount of air at a set rpm, but the variable is/was how much your engine can flow. Even across mustangs with the same engine, alterations to exhaust and intake flow, and especially cams and headers, can reduce effective boost pressure by up to 3 psi. With that much variance on cars we are familiar with, putting the asme blower on a totally different car, especially without knowing the crank dampener diameter, no one could guess what the right diameter would be. I am glad that your project is going well though and that your first guess was in the ballpark. My only suggestion would be to tune it carefully and to put a good wideband on it with a lab grade sensor if you can afford it. Driving it without a tune can pop something before you have a chance to tune it. I know from killing a motor that way...
 
thanks guys, the new ecu should be here tommorow and the wideband with it.

Funny thing, i forgot that i had set my redline to 6500 rpm for the test drive (7000 is normal) and i hit 9 psi max at 6500 rpm, which was too much as it is, i can only assume its gonna get worse in the last 500rpm so i went ahead and ordered a billet 4.0 inch pulley hoping that will get me down to 6-7 psi at 7000rpm where i want to be.

The motor can take more boost but right now im limited by my injectors to less than 450whp and i dont want to get close enough to risk it. Dyno will be on friday ill post up my results. Thanks again.
 
well guys thought i would update this..

The 4.0 inch pulley gave me exactly 6psi at 7200 rpm and the car picked up nice power, i wasnt expecting it to pick up power everywhere north of 3000rpm but id did. I had a few issues but got them worked out, here is the dyno sheet Thanks for the help again.
