I have a '98 convertable V-6 'stang and the speedometer went out in it (the odometer stilled worked). I picked up a used instrument cluster on eBay and installed it. Everything worked great except the odometer.

So I thought I just got a cluster with a bad odometer. I purchased ANOTHER cluster on eBay and when I installed it the odometer didn't work in it either. Now I'm getting suspicious. Does the speedometer and odometer use the same signal to operate? Is there something in the car that only allows the original odometer to function? Any help would be appreciated. Or am I just having bad luck with instrument clusters?

just a thought but maybe they were selling the clusters on ebay because they went bad on them? or are they new?

Well that's very possible. That's why I posted a question here. If the signals are the same and there is not reasonable explaination that the odo. doesn't work then I will suck it up and buy a new one. Can't wait to see how much the stealership wants for that....

I think the car's mileage is stored in the ECU, not the cluster. That's the case with most cars that have electronic odos to prevent fraud by installing a different cluster. Is the odo display dark, or does it just not count off miles?

The 98's are not digital.. they are the turning kind.. they cant go dark.

ameiurus : MAKE SURE YOU INDICATE YOU CHANGED THE GAUGES IN THE TITLE!! I have a v6 and I have guages from a GT, I bought my car like this and didnt realize it til 2 months after I owned it.. and I am trying to see if I can sue Carmax because they did not tell me that the gauges and the odometer were not original to the car (mioleage fraud). I wouldnt want something like that to happen to you if you sell the car at some point.

Take the back off the gauge cluster and look where the odometer chasis is. There is a little motor that turns a worm gear that turns another gear which makes the odometer turn. They break pretty easily and most people will tell you that new ones arent available. BUT... I know a guy who makes them (newest mold cost over $6000) , (just got a set for my boss, and my set has worked for 2 years now) and I am going to start re-selling them for him. If the interest is out there. email and I may be able to help if this indeed is your problem

Is this an original Cluster that would work in my 1987 Convertible 2.3L? Turn signals work, but not correctly.
