How do you guys with off-road h and x pipes pass emissions? My friend has an '86 Supra Turbo with no cats. He paid the test guy $300 to pass him. Do you guys put the stock stuff back on or do you pay the test guy off? I always wondered what people do with no cats.

most people i know keep the stock pipes and put them on every 2 years to pass emissions. i think in CA its becoming a lot harder to just give the guy a few bucks to pass because of the heavy fines and numerous BAR undercover cars on the road.

I had the same problem. I kept my stock H and put it on. The OBDII is very hard to trick, and mostly the MIL's wont work, well that is here in NC. Most people havent found a way around the OBDII's, because they are so very difficult to get around. So to be on the safe side keep the stock H. Possilbly even put hollowed out cats on the o/r H to make it look like you have cats on there, that way you can go to your local meineke and theyll install it, thinking you have cats on it. :nice:

here in il if you have a 96 or newer i (not positive on the year) all they do is throw codes and if you have a good burned chip it will tottally control the comp, however arnt the people there trained to smell the toxic air comin out the back, i can smell no cats from just driving behind them

here in PA, emissions isnt a huge deal. just go to a cruddy mechanics shop that does state inspection, and pay them 150$. Why 150? Because under PA state law, if you fail emissions, you must do at most 150$ worth of "modifications" to the exhaust\car to pass emissions (on a different sniff test). If you do 150$ worth of mods in attempt to pass (new cats\mid pipe i assume you'd spend it on, maybe new cams depending on your setup) and you STILL fail the emissions test, you can be "exempted" for 1 year. So, at crappy places, you can just give em a check for 150. If the cops/FBI/CIA question it, the mechanics can say "well gee... we tried everything to get his car to pass, but it just wouldnt, so we exempted him". Mind you, upscale places won't do this. But crappy places would be more than happy to get the 150$.

Also, you do not HAVE to do emissions in PA if you drive the car LESS than 1,000 miles per year, or if it's 6 years old or later. (cars older than 6 years just get visual inspection, so, gut some cats and you're good).

Or you could always just put functioning cats on for 1 day :p

if you're curious to know your STATE and COUNTY's laws, look on the local DMV's website. They have all the info. That's where I got mine from.

Here in PA it's also legal to drive people over 18 around in the bed of a pick up truck unsecured if the truck is going 35MPH or under.

yeah all I did was switch my stock pipe back on....but it pissed me off because all he did was just check the computer...no sniffer...I know I would of passed..but I was afraid that they might notice that my car is extra loud..or that the exhaust smells kinda funny and look a little harder...

I think next time I will just give it a shot...or pay someone off..most guys around here in vegas will do it for under 100$ but I am from AZ and have to deal with AZ emmissions..
