Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

Yes shifting is not notchy at all. It is not like a Honda 2000. But
the result excellent. I just drove a 2003 cobra and Z06
Vette. It shifts better then both of those. I would say the feeling of
the shift is positive and nothing catching the shifter.

If I had a car that was out of warranty and was keeping the car,
it is worth paying for.

Cool. I called the service manager today and told him about the part numbers. I felt like it surprised him since he didn't think there was a fix on this. He is going to check on this and he said he would give me a call soon. Either way, I'm taking the part numbers to them in a few days and have them replace these parts in my car. I'm also printing these part numbers from fordparts.com and printing off your post #691 and show them that also. I'm not going to leave there until they say they will fix this. Just like you had said, "the car is going to be here until it's fixed".

Does anyone have the letter from tremec so that I can show my dealer the new parts proof from tremec and the correct amount to fill the tranny with fluid? If so please PM me or email it to me. My dealer won't fix it without this. I can't just give them the part numbers alone cause they won't believe me. Thanks

If it could be posted here, I could use a copy also.

If it helps you I should have it on a printed out email from tremec at my office. If you're interested please PM and I could fax it to you tomorrow.

Well, it's been 2 weeks since the new tranny has been installed and even with the fluid at 3.2L it's still somewhat notchy.

Without calling Ford or Tremec is there a website or some other location that I could verify that my new tranny is indeed a newer updated model 3650 as per what Ford told me. I guess I'm looking for the build date.

I have both serial numbers from the old and new tranny.

Even though a new tranny was installed I'm curious if it was built before the so-called fix was known by Tremec.

Did they replace the whole transmission, or did they take out the defective parts and replace them with the new parts? If they replaced the whole transmission, I would think they just replaced it with an exact duplicate. If I can ever convince the dealer to do this, I just want the new parts replaced.

They replaced the whole tranny. Looks like I'll have to contact tremec to verify the build date.

Well, all the parts were ordered and will be here today. They said they would tear out the tranny today, then replace on Monday. My dealer also looked shocked. He said they are use to the Mustang transmissions being notchy and clunky feeling. I told him that is because they are all messed up and it took Tremec this long to come out with a solution! Anyhow, my dealer has been very helpful with the situation! They also were able to adjust my fender on the passenger side! So now all items that my car was in for are all going to be fixed! The replacement front fender stripe will be there this morning...

I guess Tremec's recommendation is 3.2L of DextronIII for replacing the fluid. I seem to recall that they recommend against using synthetic, but I'm not sure. I perused this thread (is this a record for length?) but couldn't find anything.

Now they say not to reduce the fluid. I talked to a guy a couple of weeks ago from tremec . Don't reduce the fluid.

Yup. I called Tremec myself a few weeks ago and they recommended 4 quarts (but don't overfill; if it's coming out of the fill hole, it's full) of Mercon ATF (Dextron III I think) or if you want to use a sythetic, go for the Mobil One ATF.

So much for lowering the fluid level. I still may drain/refill the tranny this spring, but I doubt I'll go with the lower fluid level since Tremec recommends 4 quarts.

I picked up my new Mach1 today. While doing everything else that goes with getting out the door, I had the saleman introduce me to the Service Manager. I had a nice conversation with him about the 3650 and the posting here on this forum. I said my new car (which I had just driven) did not have any grind or clunkyness into 2nd or 3rd and if it started I'd like to think he would take care of it without questions. He responded this way:

1) Grinding or clunking into 2nd gear is NOT normal.
2) They have had no problems so far with these transmissions in 2004's (I didn't ask about earlier years as I haven't seen anyone with a 2004 post here).
3) If it starts to grind or clunk they will fix it, period.

Yeah, I know it's a dealer talking, but I still feel better that I had this conversation and my sales person was present. Here's hoping the 2004 models have the updated parts and I won't have to deal with some of the issues some of the posters here have had to. This place has a lot of great information and I'm glad my salesman turned me on to it!

Meantime, I installed my Tri-ax shifter when I got home and went for a nice drive!

Did they say why?

When I spoke to them back in Nov they reccomended going with 3.2L.

So with the new tranny installed now I had my mechanic lower it to 3.2L.

Wish Me Luck

undefinedHi guys taking my ride in on Monday 02/16 and believe it or not the Ford service dept has all ready told me that "it is a common problem and there's nothing they can do but they will look at it" :nonono: I printed out the part numbers from an earlier post anything other help you guys can give me I would be grateful. My car only has 23,000 on it but I want the problem fixed before warranty runs out. From some of these posts it sounds like some of you have had success please let me know how you did it..Thanks :flag:

Hey everyone, I'm good friends with a Ford mechanic in Johnstown OH (bout 20 minutes east of Columbus. Anyways, I just spoke to him and he said that his service manager advised him that there is a TSB coming out in the next 2 weeks. Good News For Us!!

Hi:
New to this site.
Good to see there might be a TSB - with a fix. My '02 with 22k is developing the 1-2 2-3 problem. As long as I shift like I'm "Driving Miss Daisey" its OK. Any quicker shifting than that and I feel the "clunk," "catch," whatever it is.

Crossing my fingers.

Seems like I've heard that before, but I hope you are right.
