Just a quick question. How loud is your transmission if you shift through the gears while sitting parked with the engine off? I'm talking with the windows down or door open? Can you hear it mesh pretty well or is it relatively quiet??

It's going to be pretty loud. There is no real point in doing it.

I was just curious.

I was sitting parked today and ran through the gears with the engine off and it seemed louder than usual to me. Then again it's not something i do often so i can't really compare it to a previous expeirence.

I also notice that on a cold morning or a cold rainy day in general if i have the windows open i can hear my trans mesh from thje outside of the car when i shift.

I have 22K miles and a clunky 1-2 shift. Have not had the TSB done, was waiting for the general consensus on it.

Good news!

The Ford Service guy called and said my parts were in on Monday April 4th. I dropped it off after hours Monday night. He called me today to say that they finished rebuilding it and its halfway installed back in the car and that I should have it Wednesday!!

Pull rebuild install in almost 1 day = Priceless.

Same here ... everyone's tops were down and my vert was in the shop. I'm supposed to get it Thursday .... and wouldn't you know, it's supposed to rain. But, I'd rather them take their time and do it right the first time.

noise from trans

I am still trying to decide if I going to let Ford play with my trans. My trans is notchy going into second and it is somtimes hard to put into gear. It is also makes a strange noise at times. I don't know how to explain the noise. It is like a growl. It is like I can here the gears in the trans spinning. I can't hear it all the time. I notice the sound more often since I installed my short throw shifter. I don't think the shifter has anything to do with it. I could here these sounds when I had my console apart around the shifter. I think the sound travels through my new shifter so I here it more now. Did anyone have these sounds in there trans before the TSB and if so did the TSB fix it? Would a firewall adjuster and new quandrant for the clutch cable fix it or help?

Thanks,

Gear oil

Hey guys i am recently new owner of a 2002 mustang gt 5spd. I have the same problems 8800 miles and i have a raspy/clunky shift. I want to know if any one has tried bg syncroshift gear oil. I had a DSM about 4 yrs back, eclipse talon, 90-94, anyways its commonly known to dsm owners that bg syncroshift would drastically improve shift quality. My car was grinding second, after install of bg syncroshift it shifted much smoother. Its as close to a rebuild in a can as you can get. Has any one tried this gear oil? I know they have bg syncroshift II out now. Just my .02 cents.

I'd just take it in a have the TSB done. It won't cost you anything

Same goes for you. Even though you bought it used, it should still be covered by Ford. Go to your local dealer and they'll be able to type in the vin# and see if it's been done or not. From the sound of it, yours hasn't been serviced yet. Changing the trans fluid alone isn't going to do much. You're just putting a band aid on a broken bone.

That's A shifter has nothing to do with it. I would make some phone calls or talk to the service manager/General Manager of the dealer. Make some noise, and threaten to never buy from there again. They're going to get paid for it, so I don't see what the big deal is. A TSB is not the same as a recall, but it should be covered reguardless of warranty.

If they still don't bite, I'd find yourself another dealer.

Guys believe me i know that the gear oil is only a bandaid. I completely understand how the whole syncro setup works. I demonished 2 trannys in 25k in my dsm. so i got to rebuild two. hehe. So you guys think that the ford dealership will fix the problem even if its out of warranty? my car has 8800 miles on it and its a 02 purchased in nov 01. I know the guy i bought it from is a lawyer and only drove it on the weekends. I just believe that the day he drove it off the lot it was not shifting right and he just didnt know any better.

thanks for you help

It is a design flaw, fluid may help some.
My whole theory is that the 2nd/3rd gear cluster is too heavy and the small syncro cannot speed it up fast enough before the gears have to mesh. If you look at the parts in the service kit the new 2nd/3rd gear is actually thinner from what my dealer told me. They removed some mass and that allows it to spin up, match the mating gear, and mesh smoothly.

The syncro was to soft, they used a harder syncro to solve the issue from what I have been told.

I have an '04 and went over to Ford today. I have 35,970 on my 2004 and my warranty is just about up, but i still took it. Anyways, i went and told them that everytime that i use force to go from 2nd to 3rd, i get a nice grinding sound. Well, they decided that i could take the transmission specialist on a ride and he will see if he can diagnose my problem. I started the car and drove down an exmpty road. I drove normally and when i was about to go to 3rd, i told him to listen. I held my clutch in and pushed into 3rd with some force. Sure enough, i got a nice grind and i asked him what he thought. He told me that it had to be the synchros and that he's been getting mustangs in lately with the same problem. So, I asked him if it will be covered under warranty. He looked at my odometer and told me that since they recorded the problem under 36,000, I will get it done under warranty. The next thing was about an aftermarket shifter. He told me that they dont have any problem with them and i dont need to remove it . All he had to do was record my tranny number and then he told me that he's ordering my parts and will be calling me soon to install them. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I finally get to have my tranny fixed ..i will keep everyone updated

I talked to the dealer last night and he said my parts are in, but they're waiting on 5th gear. He said one of the teeth on 5th gear was chipped and the ordered a new one to replace it while it's apart. The new gear is suppose to be in this morning and my car should be done this afternoon. We'll see.

dsg_gt2004 NICE AVATAR!
