Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

I have read this thread a couple of times over the past few months, but never completely. My Bullitt has the cold grind now, although it didn't for the first 25000 miles or so. It happened about the time I change the factory fluid out. Starting at about 8000 miles or so it developed a "whirring" sound coming from the bellhousing. Push the clutch in and it goes away. I don't know if it is an input bearing or what. Once it warms up a random knocking sound comes from the same area. Again, I haven't read through the entire thread, so I haven't seen this mentioned.

I keep hearing there is a fix coming and basically stopped driving the car over two months ago to make sure the warranty was still there when the fix came. I am getting tired of not driving it and I have a set of headers to put on :) But I don't dare do that until I figure out what is up with a fix. I haven't taken it in because I don't want worse than what I got. Not up for being a beta tester for "this weeks fix." I am not particularly keen on the idea of having to pay for a clutch that they will no doubt hit me up for :nonono:

Fluid change may have filled higher than before. I know in my case by dropping the trans fluid level my 1-2 shift issues went from 90% of the time to almost not noticable. Recommendation came fro Tremec, not Ford. Could get you going until the TSB comes out. I see it as a band-aid, not a permanent fix.

GiddyUp!

:nice:

Just a little advise, for what it's worth

I know this sounds strange but from my experience, the dealer is about the last in line to know about any upcoming TSB's or Recall's (now called Field Service Actions). If you are experiencing problems you should notify your service people so it gets on record. Just don’t expect them to be able to do something right away. The problem is if there isn’t any info from the factory regarding known conditions, they really can’t do anything. Even if they try something, what can they do? Replace a problem part with the same problem part? In my opinion, we should try to keep good relations with our service departments and work with them, not against them. We are far better off voicing our concerns to the 1-800 numbers and writing to the factory. That’s where the power of many will get the biggest and quickest response. I guess I’m trying to say, your fight is with FoMoCo, not your dealer. Stay in contact with your service guys and keep asking them for updates. That way when something does come up, they’ll think of you.

:nice:

When I called Tremec in January 2004, they told me the fill level was 4 quarts of Mercon (?V) or Mobil One Synth ATF fluid.

How recently did they tell you to lower the fluid level and what were the specifics? Did you speak to Tremec directly?

Going into it I had heard about the level thing, so when I first changed it I used about 113 ounces of Redline D4 ATF. Right away it was worse. A couple weeks later with no improvement, I finally brought it to 120 ounces to see if that would help. I didn't. I dumped the $35 worth of Redline down the drain and put 119 ounces of regular old Dexron III in it. No improvement either. I should have left the factory fill in

On a side note, the headers are going in now :) . I have been waiting and waiting for the trans fix to come before doing them, I am tired of waiting. If it breaks it breaks :( The headers have been in the box for a year and a half.

Still screwed up

Well Ford replaced my trans, they were real nice about it. As soon as I pulled out of their parking lot the 1-2 clunk was still there on the new trans. I made a u turn went right back in side. Then I got the "it's suppose to that" talk. I am ready to just give up. If you spend 27,000 on a car it should shift better than a 30 year old pinto :nonono:

This is why I got rid of my 2003 Mustang GT Premium. Their not going to sit their ripping a new car apart 10 times trying to fix this . this is bull. Ford is not Loyal to their customers. They DON'T CARE. I Pulled My 1978 Z28 Out Of the garage today after sitting 2 weeks, and it shifted GREAT! Remember This car is 26 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!! Ford is a bunch Bullshi-t. Dom

Sorry to ask, but what is a TSB (I mean what does it stand for -- I know its sposed to fix our problem) -- I have a '03 GT and I have had the 1-2 clunk from day 1 or 2 also, I just now found out it was a common problem -- before I knew that I was just pretty much waiting for my tranny to bust to get it fixed under warranty. So when this TSB is released, will I be able to get my 3650 fixed at my local dealer and it be covered under my warranty?

Thanks

Didn't you tell them about the new parts? If I was you, I wouldn't have accepted a transmission change because all that is, is changing one faulty product for another. Tell them about the new parts. Give them the part numbers. Print off some of the posts here.

My service manager didn't even know about the new parts! It's pretty bad when you have to do the "homework" for them. He was giving me the run around also that "it's normal". They wasn't going to fix it because they knew that if they just replaced it, the same problem would be there. They wouldn't even admit there was a problem to begin with even though I knew they knew there was one, but after I proved to them by showing them the new part numbers and printing off some of the posts here, they finally admitted that there WAS a problem after contacting his superior about this. So he said after consulting his superior, that there is a TSB coming out in March and he would let me know as soon as it comes out. I really do believe that it is coming. A lot of you (including me) have heard that MANY times before, but I really believe it is coming and soon.

TSB stands for technical service bulletin. It's Ford's official fix for the problem. It's not like a recall in that they won't send out notices to customers, but Ford often will cover the repair, even if you're out of warranty.

Ford offices called me today. I told them my 1-2 problem is better but not sure its 100% fixed. Still is very notchy. Another concern I have is at mid to high rpm's 2nd to 3rd there is a hang up (not a grind) but it's like you have to push it into gear and you feel a click . It's like you can feel the teeth on the gears going together. My 98 gt was nothing like this. As far as the TSB is concerned I dont think we will ever see one. I dont care what ford tells you they have been telling me there is one comming for some time now. And as of today no TSB in system anywhere.

There are so many pages here to go through. Does anyone remember the website to the blue oval ford reps. I can't seem to find that page. That 1-800 number is bull sh** that Ford gives you. Thanks.

Thanks Twisted, but I meant the full link. I searched that site and can't find the list of Ford reps and their numbers or email addresses. I must be looking at the wrong links or something.

Dealer Update?

I talked to my dealer today and they said they have all the parts in stock now for the fix. These parts:

3r3z*7124*BA SYN ASY TRANS
3r3z*7102*AA GR ASY-TRANS INTERM
3r3z*7107*AA RG-TRA/AX SYN BLK
3r3z*7230*AB FK ASY/TRANS 1st & 2nd GR SH
1r3z*7109*aa KIT-TRANS SNP RG
XT*2*QDX FLUID-ATUO TRANS 1QT MERCON

Are these all the parts needed? I am afraid that if I do this before a TSB that there might be additional parts added and I will be screwed?
