I know its virtually as far away from mustang relations as you can get but im sure alot of the peeps on the forumn are interested and due stuff like this...

I wanted a trailer for my quad so I looked around at some used ones for sale and they were 2 things-JUNK!!!!! and overly priced, I then looked at some for sale at places like home depot etc. and they had the same problem so I decided to build my own,

I pretty much drew up the plans myself, i just looked around at a few trailers and grabbed the ideas i liked and put it all together the way i wanted it....


Its nothing special just a 7x9 tilt flat deck trailer, Currently the only thing i needed a trailer for was to haul my quad around with so I built this trailer with the tilt deck for easy loading,But if I need i can fit 2 full size quads on there if i load them sideways, according to local d.o.t. laws i was allowed to go 8 foot 6 inches wide and if i did that id have been able to haul 2 quads side by side but then the trailer is wider then the truck by about 10 inches a side and i wanted to avoid that....

I used a 3500 pound gvw rated axel (way way over kill for this trailer but thats ok) I got it as a complete unit with springs and shakels minus rims and tires.....

the lights are common you can buy them anywhere, I sprung for the cool L.E.D. lights, I also put on a set of 5 inch backup lights just for the hell of it ....

i used a 3/4 inch plywood deck with a gallon of $9 stain slopped on it.... I went with a 2 inch ball

The bolt pattern is 4.5 inch center 5 bolt so i grabbed a nice set of junkyard dog rims with good winter tires for $40

I probly built the trailer way over kill for its initial purpose using a 3x3x1/4 toung, 2.5 x 2.5 x 1/8 main frame tubes, 2x2x1/10 cross members, 3x3x1/8 angle to cap the plywood with and the 6 inch channel bumper....... but hey if your gonna do it do it right...

it cost me probly alot more then you think it would but it was still cheaper then buying a trailer....

steel $500
plywood $75
lights, hitch misc $200+


Then I wont mention the $1000 welder i bought and the 12.5 amp makita 5 inch angle grinder and the cool machinst square set... and on and on

but anyways if anyone has any questions or needs some suggestions on how to build one i can snap some pics for ya....... :canflag:

The only thing i might change is the tire size i have 205 75 r15 on there now so thats a pretty large tire... I love it for the clearance and what i can pull it through in the bush but notice the angle the deck tilts on, thats not a big deal for a quad but if had to load a garden tractor id be in trouble, also with such a large tire the deck tilts forward when its on the truck..... I think i coulda done without as much tire to deck clearance Its at 3.5 inches I could knock out one 2 inch lift block but im unsure if 1.5 inches would be enough clearance

Notice how i built the tie down rails and how they are sorta like a steak pocket type deal, If I wanna build sides for it one day I can.....

You could have also placed the pivot point on the center of the axle, this would also help in lowering it, along with smaller diameter tires, essentially like the 4-wheeler dump cart I built a few years back to tow behind a 4 wheeler ( lawn tractor now, the 4 wheeler was stolen ) I wanted something better than the POS carts they sell at the home improvement stores that also had the capability of being towed at 4 wheeler speeds. I would definately put shorter tires on that, it'll save your 4 wheeler the first time you swerve to avoid something in the road.

if you look at this pic and think about it the pivot point of the tounge makes no difference in the angle of the deck or how the deck sits in relation to the truck...its all in the axel as the axel is the pivot point for the trailer, just think triangles....

i could move the axel forward or backward and that would change the angle of the deck while tilted but then i run into problems with tounge and axel weight.... ya smaller tires are probly the best solution.....

The second day i owned my quad we were coming home and it was on a tilt trailer simalar to this one my buddy had, the pin came out and the trailer tilted back going down the highway... the truck got sent into a fishtail and as the trailer bucked and kicked.... we eventually got to a stop but not before the tie downs snapped and the quad rolled off... it did at least 2 rolls on the highway at 80kmh Thank god nobody was coming!!! the bars/racks/gas tank/seat got all tore off and spread down the highway after the first ride but $600 later in parts i was back at it

Uhh...what keeps them on...very crafty but I am a little paranoid and would have made some siderails and a rear gate..nice job though..maybe i am just to paranoid

4 of those keep it on, I have a tie down rail all the way around the trailer to ainker to. Those tie downs have like a 8000 pound rating so there overkill but note the post above if i woulda had them in the first place id be $600 richer


I designed it with sides in mind, note how the tie down rails have steak pockets and how they meet flat with the deck of the trailer... I can build removable sides if id like to one day.....
