So, I'm going to changing my oil tomorrow along with other things. I bought my motorcraft oil filter and will be ditching out the Fram Tough Guard that I hear is horrible. But I heard people recommending Mobil 1 synthetic and wanted to give it a shot (I've used nothing but Chevron oil, and have been pleased). Well when I went to Walmart they were selling it for 22 bucks for a 5 quart jug, plus another 5.50 for single quarts, so almost 30 dollars for 6 quarts. I looked at alternatives and they sell a Motorcraft synthetic as well it's 10 dollars for the 5 quart and around 3 for singles. Is Mobil 1 really worth 30 bucks? Should I try the motorcraft, or should I just stick to my regular chevron oil?

The Motorcraft is a synthetic blend not a fully synthetic oil. IMO, Mobil1 is worth it. I've been very happy with it.

Whether M1 is "worth it" or not depends on what you're going to be doing with it. If you're running 3-5k OCI's, then - no - it's not worth it. 3-5k OCI's are well served by Motorcraft. It's a nicely priced blend.

With M1, the upfront cost is going to be more, but you'll be running the oil a lot longer. 8-10k is probably a "normal" run for that oil. (You can get is analyzed to see if you want).

BTW, the "Tough Guard" Fram series isn't all that bad. Not something you want to be running long OCI's on, but they're OK. The "regular" Frams are the real P.'sO.S.

i think M1 sucks. Its sucked butt on everything i've used it in, and if i can find papers of my analysis' i'll post them on here for proof. get something else, valvoline, castrol syntec, no reason to use crap1. of course, people here swear by it from no proof so..w/e

Motorcraft is good oil, and its not too expensive.

Get a Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter, Walmart should carry them (ours do).

Yeah I picked up a Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter yesterday, but couldn't decide if I wanted to spend close to 30 bucks on oil since I have about half a case of Chevron left. I can use that oil for another car, so it's not bad just thought I would try something else.

I guess you can't really go wrong with Motorcraft since it's what Ford uses.

I did some re-search on oil since i want to switch from rp. after searching on the internet for a while I found that valvoline syn power actually outperformed m1 in 90% of the testing catigories including the anti wear test. so as you might have guessed i just picked up 6qts and a motocraft filter from walmart only $28 for everything. just my 2cents.

yes- very true, and in my application syn power has also out preformed mobil 1. Advertising is a very powerful thing- mobil one has a religious following because of it. I wonder what would happen if more people actually had their used oils tested, and compared mobil 1 to any other synthetic oil,

I just used motocraft 5w20 for years and my compression test showed avg. of 210 after I did my head swap. I Drove that car like I stole it and the engine had 150,XXX miles on it. Mobile one is a waste of money!

Meh...get whatever reputable brand is on sale. It's really not that big of a deal for your average consumer. Regular changes are more important that what brand you're running through the crank case.

if you do a yahoo or google search you can find some oil tests online and neither of the two penzoils ever do very good.

I go with the good old motorcraft in the 5 quart jug for 10.88 and 4.87 for the filter.

I drive the car maybe 2,000 miles a year. Change the oil twice a year. Once when it comes out of the garage for the winter and once when it goes back in for storage. No sense in the mobil 1.
The explorer gets the same but it gets changed every 3,000 miles which is about every 4 months maybe.
