Something quite wierd happens when I take my car onto the highway and drive at higher speed (~80mph, ~3000rpm). I notice something splatters onto my windshield. It's not water, and it's not windshield washer fluid. I know this because when I put my wipers on to clean the windshield, it smears all over the place. It's not a gigantic splatter but just a few specks of liquid here and there, across most of the windshield. I have a cowl hood, but I doubt it's anything coming out from there. And I also doubt that it's coming from under the grill behind the hood (just wiper hoses/linkage in there, right?) WTF IS GOING ON?

Help much appreciated!

Hehehe funny you should mention that.

The heater core was replace about 2 months ago (and in the meantime had started leaking again). Last week I bypassed the whole heating system with a U-tube under the hood.

The liquid is on the outside of the windshield, and occurs at times of higher engine stress (although I wouldnt describe 80mph on the highway or ripping around the neigborhood as putting "stress" on the engine....then again, 130k miles...). Today I beat on engine a little and got the splatter while driving around the city, normal speeds.

Yes I use a cowl hood, but I don't see how anything could be coming from the engine compartment since the cowl actually sucks in. Even if I had a leak in one of the coolant lines (which I probably do), I don't see how it could exit the engine compartment.

I might add that this was happening much before the U-tube was installed.

Have you figured out what the mystery liquid is? I was gonna say, next time it splashes on the winshield, pull over and take a whiff. At least that way you will know what you are dealing with.
