Something quite wierd happens when I take my car onto the highway and drive at higher speed (~80mph, ~3000rpm). I notice something splatters onto my windshield. It's not water, and it's not windshield washer fluid. I know this because when I put my wipers on to clean the windshield, it smears all over the place. It's not a gigantic splatter but just a few specks of liquid here and there, across most of the windshield. I have a cowl hood, but I doubt it's anything coming out from there. And I also doubt that it's coming from under the grill behind the hood (just wiper hoses/linkage in there, right?) WTF IS GOING ON?

Help much appreciated!

maybe spray from another car? Any chance you have a small brake line leak and you stepped on brakes and it go a little from leak on windshield? My bro inlaws truck does that.

That would make the most sense, but it was happening in the winter.

This is from the outside of the car? Just curious have you ever replaced your heater core?

Hehehe funny you should mention that.

The heater core was replace about 2 months ago (and in the meantime had started leaking again). Last week I bypassed the whole heating system with a U-tube under the hood.

The liquid is on the outside of the windshield, and occurs at times of higher engine stress (although I wouldnt describe 80mph on the highway or ripping around the neigborhood as putting "stress" on the engine....then again, 130k miles...). Today I beat on engine a little and got the splatter while driving around the city, normal speeds.

have you checked all the coolant line connections make sure they are tight. also no chance of a small hole in the U-Tube that you used?

Yes I use a cowl hood, but I don't see how anything could be coming from the engine compartment since the cowl actually sucks in. Even if I had a leak in one of the coolant lines (which I probably do), I don't see how it could exit the engine compartment.

I might add that this was happening much before the U-tube was installed.

Have you figured out what the mystery liquid is? I was gonna say, next time it splashes on the winshield, pull over and take a whiff. At least that way you will know what you are dealing with.

Pick yourself up a flourescent black light (Spenders gifts maybe?) and confirm or rule out anti-freeze.

Do you by chance, use a valve cover vent of some sort?

No valve cover breather.

I'm not worrying about this anymore. Tomorrow I WILL beat on that engine like a dead horse and find out what the dick is going on.
