if they wont take your old oil/coolant for whatever bullsh-t reason just leave it in front of their doors after hours when their closed. when they open up in the morning they'll have no choice but to take it in.

I can change my oil for free and in 10 minutes at work.

gear install. I hope i could change the fluid after doing things like a head swap .

yea i mean i wish i had the tools to do the gears. the 2.73's have gotta go!!!!

i took mine to a shop once.then changed the oil in my car myself the next time and had to use a pipe wrench to get the drain plug's out,and had to buy 2 new ones because of it.thank god it did do nay damage to the threads or i would have had to replace the pan.never went back and no one else will ever change the oil in any of my cars ever again.

That's why I have NEVER taken any of my vehicles to these oil change stations. Too many young bucks working at them that have something to prove to the world. When you have to hit the wrench with a hammer to break loose the oil pan bolt, it's WAY too tight! (or when you have to hammer a screwdriver through the filter to get it loose, yea, that's too tight too, lol)

I gotcha. No offense was meant - since it was an fluid changing thread, I wasnt sure.

I dont trust any of the garages either, too many horror stories, too many scratches...no thank you. My car has seen nothing but Mobil 1 in it's life. I can usually do a full Mobil 1 oil change for around $23. Most of the shops around here want 50-60 to do it. The regular oil changes are at least 20-25 at shops and they use cheap generic oil/filters. I also like to be able to visual inspect things while Im under there. I have a big barrel that my father and I share for oil disposal...most places around here accept it for free so it's no big deal.

I won't turn this into a horror story thread about different oil-change garages. We all have 'em. I just feel better doing it myself. I know you don't save much money doing it yourself, I just like knowing exactly what was done to my car if I can help it.

Mobil Synthetic & Fram Filter, under 30$, takes less than 30min.

I don't know where your going white94cobra, but I live in cali and they take oil for free at Pep Boys. Nowadays I work at Toyota though and I get Mobile 1 10w30 and the orignial filter from Ford with labor for $36. Can't beat that, drop it off when I get there and pick it up when I leave.

Not changing it myself even know I can do it (who can't?) , goes up in my dad's bud garage and it's back 20mins after all done, no mess.

I change me own oil in the stang because I dont trust anybody. I like to know that it was done right. I also do it myself on my F350 because I dont even have to jack it up so its super easy. I just changed my trucks oil for 20 bucks even and took 15 minutes.

I just got done doing a Mobil 1/Motorcraft FL1A oil change for $23, much better than the $60 synthetic change at the garage with the generic crap filter

That's a big part of why I want to do it myself for the fact of horror stories. I have not had any horror stories myself, but taking my car in for maintainence and service can get expensive very fast. So its good to know the basics to prevent high costs.

Even if you can't break even with the price of the garage ... and you have to dish out a little more .... I find it worth it to DIY. If they screw something up, 9 times out of 10, they won't take responsibility & deny it.

My car always gets the Mobil 1 synthetic / FL1A change and will never see anything else.


BTW, anyone seen those quick change plug kits they sell at parts stores (by FRAM, I think)? I used one in my old Ranger & never had a problem .... but I don't know if I want to do that to the Stang yet. It allowed me to change the oil really fast, but I think that plug might remove a little too easy for me to feel safe. Any other input on these?

Justin, do you feel that the kit allowed all the oil and sludge on the very bottom of the pan a chance to come out? I kinda wondered about that.

Those kits are real popular with boat owners, which is where I normally see them used.

Ha, that helped not at all.

J/K .... but I can't remember how big the drain was in that plug. That's an interesting approach ..... let me see if I can find it online.
