Oil Filter Construction

I saw some vids online where some guys are taking apart some oil filters.

It's amazing what kind of POS a Fram filter is.

That fleetgaurd looks good doesn't it?

Mobil 1 is a ripoff, I don't see what is so special about it?

Wix looks pretty good, I would trust that:

Amsoil is a machine in itself:

I have used the Motorcraft filters for my Fords and AC Delco for my Chevy. I took apart the AC Delco the other day and it looks pretty good, probally right up there with the wix. Haven't done it to the Ford filter yet but I will. I might have to order some fleetgaurds.

So what do you use in your car?

Yeah, I always known Fram was junk. Pieces of the filter can break off and either get in the system or clog the oil passage. I have never once bought a Fram. I have always used either Purolator Pure One, Motorcraft, or K&N. They all hold up well. Never a problem .

I use Purolator Pure one...which is what the Motorcraft filter is (Pure One cartridge in a classic case)

I use Wix, have been forever, good old Auto Value parts store. Although in the mustang I use Jomar non-bypass oil filter.

the Purolator pure one is supposed to be a real good filter, I use it on my daily driver, I use motorcraft on the mustang religiously.

OMFG.... he sure was excited about that oil filter. All that money on the expensive oil filter that he paid $19.95 and I bet they used the pump "mystery" grade dino oil.

I used to work at a factory that made all the rubber seals and anti-drain back's for all those filters. I've always used Fram filters on everything.

Finally bought my first Motorcraft filter the other day and can't wait to see if it's any better.

I really don't know how you could "tell" unless you had your oil analyzed.

I know this much, the filters with that have a good anti-drainback feature will really help during cold starts. The one's with lots of pleats have more filter material and will have higher capacity. Those with metal endcaps will keep the media stable and prevent it from shifting or oil from bypassing the filter. A bypass valve isn't as important but would prevent oil pressure loss if the filter did become clogged.

What has suprised me at my work is those who spend lots of money for expensive synthetic oils and yet never think twice about the filter we are using.

cant wait to send that video to my girlfriends "never been wrong" stepdad. i was just telling him today how i hate fram filters for that reason. he is a mechanic and a loyal ford guy btw. he told me motorcraft and fram are the same inside.

Ive been using the fl1a in my mustang for years, used a Baldwin before that and both seemed to do alright. I used some kind of cheep ass filter (maybe a fram) once and didn't get as good a oil pressure with it. I looked on youtube and didn't find anything but i would like to see what the Baldwin has in it.

When i had my Mark 8, they were notorious for the cam chain tensioners to rattle on startup. I ran fram filters back then and my Mark 8 would sound like a homeless man begging for change with all the rattle.

I read up on how much Frams sucked and switched to motorcraft....and the startup rattle went away!

As long as I have been working on cars there is so much I didn't know about the oiling system. I knew about the bypass inside the oil pump to regulate the pressure, I didn't know about the one that is in the oil filter itself so basically not all of the oil is getting filtered.

Yes that is right it is there more for on cold starts, the oil pump can not force the cold oil thru the filter so the bypass opens up or if the filter gets plugged then the bypass would open. That is why I use a Jomar non bypass filter on my car which is parked during the winter anyway.
