Oil for 347? 20w-50?

Just bought a built cobra with a 347, and the previous owner always ran 20w-50 Amsoil. The only thing is that its $9/qt, and it goes through about a an extra qt every oil change, and it has a 7qt pan.

Do I HAVE to run this thick of an oil? Will it burn off something thinner, like a 10w-30 Mobil 1 that much more? Is the 20w-50 that much better at protecting the engine?

You really need to talk to the builder and he'll check the specs and tell you what to run.

I run mobil 1 15W50 in my 347.

Did the PO mention having an oil control issue?

If you go thinner, it will be more likely to burn, generally speaking. I suspect that's why the thicker oil was used...........


I would be wanting to try what Mike uses. I'd try and track down where the oil is going.

It does burn a little, the engine has 55k on it. Not more than what i would consider normal for a forged 347 with 55k on it though.

I dunno, i just wish there was someone that made 20w-50 that wasnt nearly $10/qt.

For testing purposes only I would use a cheap 10w40 and see how much more or less it uses. Then swap out to a quality oil, Motorcraft 10w40 synthetic blend .
