Ok, i have an 84 notch factory 4cyl with an 86 roller carbed engine... when i installed the fresh motor and trans to the body i never hooked up an oil pressure or water temp. gauge.... this is a project way, way, way past due ... and i need some help from you guys on how to install these gauges and whether i need mechanical gauges or electric gauges... right now there is no sending unit actually in the block.. so i know that i atleast have to buy a sending unit ... as far as the water temp goes ... im clueless on what to do there .. any pictures and responses would be greatly appreciated...

Electric gauges are much easier to install, and I believe that senders come with gauges when you buy them. I got my gauges used and had to get senders seperate from Autometer. Both of my gauges were electric and the oil pressure sender was $28 and the water temp sender was $12. I have only installed the oil pressure gauge so far and it was extremely easy, and I hate anything to do with wires.

I have both mechanical autometer ones and the mechanical water temp has a sender that threads into the lower intake to replace the stock one. The oil pressure one has a sender as well and just plugs into where the stock location is as well. As far as hookin up the lightin for the gauges I plugged them into my headlight fuse to get them to come on.

I did a real nice install for my autometer gauges modeled after srothfuss's install. I have a mechanical oil pressure and an electrical water temp. I ran the lighting to the dimmer switch so i can control the brightness of the gauges the same as the instrument panel. Took me an evening to make up the harness and an afternoon to install it in the car. Search for srothfuss's thread b/c it has tons of detail for the best ways to wire up the gauges. good luck
