Oil Pressure gauge help

Ok guys fedex just dropped off my gauge and I am in the middle of installing my other gauges so I figured I would go ahead and install the oil pressure. But what I need to know is how you guys with the oil pressure gauge installed the sender? The sender is pretty big and will not clear the oil filter and upon closer inspection it looks like it won't clear the block either. I have included a pic to better discribe this, and how far off would the reading be if I used a stock sender? Thanks alot guys and I will snap some pics of the gauges when i'm done for ya.

i assume its a 5.0, but that looks nothing like where the sender goes IMO. the sender will be on the drivers side, on a little 'thing', cant think of a good word to use, that comes off the block. its a few inches long. it will be tilting up twords you, you dont have to be under the car like you are. did you remove the stocker from that area in the pic???

You'll have to install it at an angle...more of a pain, but it looks to be the only way it will work.
That or an extension.

yes that is were the stock one came out, the hole you see right next to it is were the negitive battery cable goes. I am pretty sure that is were the oil sender was, looked like a black socket. And yes it is a 5.0, in the pic I am actully holding the sender in the hole that the old one came out of. Any ideas? Thanks

I can't tell too well form the picture, but if that is the hole you are trying to install it in, I believe there is a 2-3 inch shaft that should stick out of it. Was the stock sending unit in that hole? If so, it's missing the extension that sticks out of the block. On mine, I even used a T adapter, so I could run the stock send and the one for the gauge. I found it easier to remove the oil filter to get it on also. Good luck.

exactly what he said- except for the oil filter part IMO. i also used a Tee fitting courtesy of Lowe's so i could have the stock gauge working too

Ok two more pics, the first one is what I removed and the second one points to were I removed it from. For the guys that have an oil pressure gauge does your sender look like mine? And is it possible to snap any pics of the way you did it? Thanks alot, you have already been helpful.

WTF? my oil psi sender looked nothing like that in my 69 or my 87. your oil psi sender should look somewhat like your autometer. same shape and all. the pic is from 50resto 79-04 oil psi sending unit


mine was like this


didnt you get another sender with your gauge (2)??? does that one work???

Here's how I did mine when I added gauges recently, my stock sender also went directly into the block without an extension. I chose to keep the factory sender for the idiot light and added sending units for Autometer oil pressure & oil temp gauges by connecting 2 tees together.

Ok now I am a little more confused, I was looking at my chiltons manual and in the book the sender looks like the one I got from autometer. And I also noticed that the sender dosen't actully go into the block but attaches to a metal extension tube. The sender that was on my car was like the one that 50resto shows as the sender. I think all I need is that little metal extension, the sender I removed was directly in the block. Thanks for the help guys and any more help would be greatly apprecated.

I'd see if you could source it from ford or a wrecking yard, it seems like every one elses came with it, it shouldn't be hard to find. Yours is weird it looks like a chev sender

If you can't find that piece, you can try looking for something similar in the plumbing section of your Home Depot or equivalent big box store (most of the sensors, etc use standard plumbing threads). The only problem is that the stock extension is hex shaped so you can twist it to tighten...Maybe you can use a mini pipe wrench on it or something. Sorry I don't have any better info.

right on with what was said already. i would first try to get a stock hex tube from the boneyard. if not, as Blk said, get some stuff from the home store. the rest of the fittings are pipe thread, IIRC. i would probably get a stock hex tube though, as you are using two elec gauges? (i did not read the whole thread). two senders can be kinda heavy.

Ok I am actully going to lowes this morning and I will see if I can peice something together. I don't know why mine didn't have the hex tube but oh well. That brings me to another question, I found a hex extension for a 65-73 mustang online and was wondering if that would work with my 93? I am off to lowes, I will see what I can find. Thanks guys

Ok I got it up and running, I just want to say thanks again for everybodys help. I am still not done with all of my gauges, I just need my fuel pressure gauge and then I can install my A-piller setup. The pics are of how the car sits right now. The first pic shows the little system I came up with. The only weird thing was when I started the car for the first time with the oil pressure gauge the gauge read over 100psi. Then I went in the house and came back out and started it again. The needle went right to 50psi, looks like it is working now. (if you are wondering what is on the dash, it is just some tape I used to mark the wires)
