Hello,
got a real quick one for you. does anyone know at what pressure the oil pump bypass kicks in?
I have an 88 GT vert, if it matters.

the thing does not break 55 PSI (aftermarket gauge). like it will be at 50 psi at cold idle, but it does not go any higher when revved. im not sure why.

Mine's about the same pressure.

Tom, thanks for the reply!
i cant figure it out - would it be normal to have cold pressure at idle of 50 PSI, and then if the motor is revved to say, 3K (while still cold), to not have the pressure rise (but maybe 5-7 psi)?

i was trying to figure out if im bypassing the filter a lot of the time....though i admit i dont understand the by-pass flow and principles really well. that was my main concern.

Thanks again for the reply, Tom. my last few threads had not yielded any responses - i figured no one likes me (probably true).

I get 50 psi cold. It barely moves when cold. I get about 20-25psi hot. It only moves about 5-10 psi when reved.

I put my sender in the stock location. You?

Mine is 50 cold and after warming up it idles at 20psi but goes back to 50 at about 1,200 rpm or so.

alright, i will assume the ceiling at about 55 psi is something intrinsic to the 5.0, and not the bypass or something else kickin in. thanks for all the numbers!

ID, i have the stocker and aftermarket senders both on the stock hex tube deal (Tee'd it). i hate dead gauges, no matter how useless they are.

I would have done the same with the gauges - always good to have a cross-check. The new combo is driving great - right out of the gate. I cleared the memory and the EEC seems to have learned the new fuel curve pretty fast. the Bosch Design III Explorer injectors flow just a bit better and I have pressure set at 39 psi, whereas before my sweet spot F/P was 34psi. Major change is the ehxaust note with a much narrower resonance band at 2,000 rpm. My tires have a 9.8" patch with good rubber and I can't get traction in first gear at less than a 10+mph roll. Not hitting it too hard yet. A dyno tune will help dial in spark and fuel sweet spots and give me the new numbers. Very nice combo, judging just from the low speed drivability and the SOTP increase.

very sounding stuff, Tom! i will never have such a nice set up, but.....i can enjoy it vicariously through your experiences! that is some sick torque to have the hookin' issues you have, while you are not even leaning on it yet. very cool. when i grow up, i want a set up like yours. LOL.

ID, thanks for the link. awhile back Michael Yount posted that link (i am almost certain it was Michael), and i read up (i had known that a certain filter was not well liked, but did not know why). that and another study led to use Motorcraft filters or Purolator Pure One's. the Motorcraft and Pure One are almost identical.

i was thinking about that very thing (filter being restrictive) when i started this thread. it started with the fact that the Pure One and Motorcraft filter appear (to me) to hold a little bit different amounts of oil. i know the Pure One is a bit restrictive due to all of the filtering media (and would think the Motorcraft might be in the same boat). but i like those two (it is kinda like free flowing air elements- they flow more at the expense of allowing more particles through, which shows up on UOA's). i like better filtering, myself.

but i thank you for posting that link. it has been some time since i read it, and i know a bit more now than i did when i first read it, so more info stuck with me, and other stuff was refreshed.
