Oil pump driveshaft collar position

This was pretty snug against the block when I installed the oil pump. I had to tap the distributor to get it to seat.

I assume tapping it pushed the collar down to where it needs to be.

I just wanted to make sure I am good to go. Prelube with drill worked fine from what I could tell.

Driveshaft is an ARP unit.

Did you check the clearance between the dist and the oil pump?

No. I ordered the drive shaft one for my car and figured that it would be oem specs. I just slid it in the oil pump, with the clip/collar up towards the distributor. The collar was riding a little high so when I tightened the oil pump bolts it probably ended up with the collar snug against the block right under the distributor.

After lightly tapping the dizzy a couple times, it sat right down. Now I can take it in and out without a problem, with the normal twisting behavior of the cam gear meshing with the distributor gear.

I am using the oem distributor still.

The unit is ARP: ARP-1547904.

Is there a check I can do to make sure everything is ok? Some sort of trick like putting a glob of grease on the end of the distributor and pushing it down on the oil driveshaft, then measuring or something? Now would be the time.

It will be fine. The reason the collar had to be pushed down is because the driveshaft was meant to be put in from the bottom with the oil pump. The purpose of that collar is to keep the shaft from coming out with the distributor. The way you put it in is fine just make sure if you pull the dizzy to not let it drop in the oil pan. Worst case scenario is you'll have to fish it out of the dizzy hole with a magnet.

Ok. I was worried that it was the wrong size or something. I read some people had to grind their ARP rod down. I never even checked to make sure it was the same length as the stock one... too much faith I guess

That is why I asked if u checked the clearance...Ive had to grind the dist housing slighty to get the proper clearance...I learned the hard way when I broke a ARP shaft when I used a MSD dist on my car 11 years ago......snapped in 50 miles.

Ive never used a ARP shaft since, they have shorter relief area the a Ford Racing and can bind depending on the dist.

Hmmm... What is the proper clearance? Is it possible that I do n not have the proper clearance even though the distributor is now fully seated?

Rick, you were right. The ARP shaft was bound up between the distributor and oil pump. No clearance whatsoever.

EDIT: Nevermind... it was the collar that was keeping the the shaft pressed tightly against the pump. After I moved it down further the shaft had waaay too much clearance. (Since I ground it down)

Looks like I am off to summit to order a new one

Hows the pickup to pan clearance?

Ah, no worries. I already ordered a Ford Racing one.

The pan/pickup clearance was about .6-.65"

Lower it down till you get .50"
