oil pump driveshaft

i primed the oil pump and i got pressure on my gauge, now when i drop the distrubuter in, it won't go all the way down, it meshes with the cam and goes into the oil pump driveshaft but it still sits up about 1/4 inch. could the driveshaft be in upside down? i had the motor assembled so i didn't put it on and i didn't really look at it cause i assumed it would be right. i looked at my old motor and the drive shaft looks like it has a pointed end on the top when you look down the hole, but on the new motor it its not pointed on the top.
 
Shine a light down in there and see if it has the round clip up near the top.And the oil pump side is flat.The dist.side is rounded off.When I changed my oil-pump and shaft I had the same problem.After I worked the dist back and forth it went down so I could tighten hold down bolt.
 
i can pull the oil pump drive shaft up almost all the way but it stops at that clip. if i stick my magnet down and get it on the driveshaft, i can pull it up enough to grab with my fingers
 
At this point your best bet is to pull the oil pump shaft completely out and RTV it into the end of the distributor With the clip out of position you run the risk of pulling the dist and hearing the horrible clang of the driveshaft falling into the pan.

As to your original question, you can bump the motor over while gently pushing down the dist and it'll line up and drop down onto the drive shaft. Pretty common actually.

ok i'm gonna try and explain this the best i can, this very hard for me to type what i am trying to say lol, i am 90% sure the shaft is upside down, i can pull the shaft up so it sticks out about 2 inches above the hole in the block. when the dizzy is dropped back down it looks like it sitting about 1/4 inch too high, i tried pushing on the dizzy down but it wouldn't budge down. will having the driveshaft upside down cause the dizzy to not go down all the way, cause the way it looks i am gonna have to rip the motor out AGAIN just to flip this thing around.
 
2 days ago I pulled my oil-pump and oil-pump shaft by takeing steering rack off.This allowed the front of oil-pan to drop onto k-frame.If you sit under car with head into under balancer you can reach in and unbolt oil-pump.The pick-up tube will hold pump inplace.While you lower pump oh so slightly to drop shaft.
 
ya, the only thing i am worried about is my canton pan not allowing me to drop it enough

**** am i pissed off at the shop, i found out they open at 9 am so at 9 am i am gonna be calling them
 
ya, theres not very much room there. the more and more i look at it, the more i realize that i am gonna HAVE to pull the motor, and a sick feeling comes to my stomache cause its takin me a while just to get it back together. i have a buddy comming over tommorow morning so maybe with 2 of us we can just rip it out fast.
 
Is this a new dist or shaft? Or where these two paired together before? I ask because the dist for a 351w is not the same length as a 302. There are a variety of dist legths out there. This may or may not be your problem, just thought I would throw it out there.

I'm glad to hear you could get the pump shaft positioned correctly withough pulling the motor.

ya, i swear i almost threw up when i realized that i maybe had to pull the motor again, i just dropped it last weekend and i speant every spare minute before and after work that i had out side just doing little things, then in the middle of the week i thouht i was gonan fire it up so i went to fill it up with coolant and it poured out the water pump (the same damn shop installed the wrong gasket on) so after ripping down the front half of accecories, i changed that gasket and now i just got it ready to fire up again tonight, and this comes up, i already went today and got the insuarance put back on so i could drive it this weekend. i am so pissed off, i wanna go down there and beat the ever loving crap out of the guy at the shop. i was gonna get a dyno tune done there but that ain't gonna happen now

same dist, new shaft that was put on by the shop that did my motor. so i would not be surprised that it was the wrong shaft. i am gonna put the dizzy on and make sure its all good before the motor goes back in
 
302 shaft is 1/4" socket to prime, 351 shafts are 5/16".

One stupid point... Is it by any chance a FMS oil pump shaft with the hex sections in a round body (sorry 'bout the description it sucks), not hex allthe way like the stocker? If so then you need to cut about 3/8" off the end of the distributor shaft. The TFI style distributor shaft is longer than the early style distributors and when FMS designed the headvy duty part they made it to he old spec. Big thread on here a couple years ago about it. Ford told the guy to cut thre tip off. If you have an old carb dist laying around slide it in and check it out.
