I am getting ready to install my oil pump on my explorer 5.0. Shoulg I use rtv on the gaskets that came with the pump or should I just use plain gasket?
The 2 gaskets are for the pump to block and pump and pick up tube.

Thanks,

stykthyn

I want to measure mine. It doesn't look that tall.

Agree....that's not something you want coming loose and getting jammed up in your pump.

Whatever you do with the gaskets, make absolutely sure that they have clean metal to seat against. Poor cleanup with leftover pieces of gasket still stuck to the mating surfaces are the primary reason that gaskets leak even when the bolts are properly torqued down. Don't use RTV as a substitute for properly cleaning the mating surfaces: it won't work.

Thanks guys. whats a good liquid I can use to help remove crusted on gasket? I have a plastic gasket scraper but im hoping there is something I can spray on yo help loosen the material.

Thanks again,

I've always used a razor, just be careful with it, because it can scratch the cast iron.
