I was talking to my machinist about oil pump shafts and he said to stay away from ARP and Ford Racing hardened shaft's. And to stick with a stocker because the hardened shaft's if they barely twist will snap and a stocker will not. Like as if there to hard?

I'm also running a standard volume pump. So what do you guy's think? It's for my 331..

I've never heard any junk like that. What kind of setup are you using? I put 240,000 miles on a FMS oil pump drive shaft, and lots of users have gotten many miles out of them with no trouble. Let me know.

Yes the stocker will teist like a piece of Licorice, and the hardened shafts will just snap...however I would still put in the hardend shaft since it will take more abuse.

I like the Ford Motorsport shafts they have deeper reliefs then the ARP which can cause some issues on EFI Fords if the dist isn't clearanced. Probe offers a new billet shaft looks nice.

If you rev high, use a high volume/pressure pump, want peace of mind, or all the above, then get a hardened shaft. Yes, they do snap(done it), but it takes alot more stress to snap a hardened shaft than it does to twizzle a stock one. In fact, after I broke my second FMS shaft on another car, the bottom of the distributor shaft had split too.

If I'm going to have the pan off of an engine, be it stock or modified, I'll put a new hardened shaft it.

cool... the key is "standard pump because of the clearances" IF you bend or twist or break a pump shaft.... your in trouble!! I have used both and all I build with are the hi-vol pumps ( loose is better). If there is pump lock up.. who cares if it twists, bends, or breaks... the trouble is there!! as for the performance shaft being "brittle" and breaking easy.... dont think so.. or why use it??
