Oil Q'

I have a V6 (Obviously) and I was going to put this in the V6 section of the forums but I think i'll get better answers in here. Can I use a different number oil for my oil. Ie. instead of 5w 30 can I use 10w 40? And what kind of a difference would it make, like, would it give me better lubrication/protection... etc?

you can use any number oil you want, it's your car


the higher the number the thicker the oil. if your car calls for 5w30, stick with that. no reason to go higher, no added protection

That's what I thought, I was just wondering if I used a higher number, if it would help out at all, even if it's just a little.

a higher number oil might actually hurt things


since the 3.8 is an older, less precise engine it really doesn't apply but on some newer higher tech engines with really tight tolerances (nissan's vq engines, fords new 3v's, porsches, etc.) a thicker oil won't get into all the places it needs to like a thinner oil will. you'll see some of these cars call for 0w20 oil, that's kinda thin

Ok. So pretty much just stick with whats recomemded. I was just wondering since i've got a decent amount of things done to the engine that maybe a thicker oil might help out things.
